iPhone will boast 8 hours of talk-time instead of 5; glass instead of plastic

Apple says it has boosted the iPhone's battery life significantly beyond the figures specified when the device was announced. The iPhone will now deliver up to 8 hours of talk-time (instead of 5 has originally announced) and 250 hours of standby time. It is not yet clear whether this improvement is due to increased battery capacity or reduced power usage.

The iPhone will also now deliver -- on average -- 6 hours of Internet use (instead of 5), 7 hours of video playback (instead of 5) or 24 hours of audio playback (instead of 16).

Apple simultaneously announced that … Read more

IM Web app designed for iPhone debuts

The same developer who designed an interface to Digg for the iPhone, David Cann, has now created a Web-based instant messaging client that is designed for the iPhone with regard to pixel size, but obviously cannot be guaranteed compatible as it has not been tested with the device.

The developer says:

"Use your mouse to flick (drag and release) your buddy list up and down like you're supposed to on the iPhone. Click a buddy to start a conversation. You can open multiple conversations... flick left/right to change conversations."

So far, limitations include no groups, no … Read more

Uncertified iPhone accessories may void device warranty

We have received word that Apple will indeed offer certification for iPhone accessories as previously speculated. This development was not unexpected, as there have long existed certification and royalty requirements for accessories that carry the "Made for iPod" label. However, it appears that requirements for iPhone-certified accessories will be more stringent than for the iPod, and use of non-certified accessories may be grounds for violation of the device's warranty.

Based on information from sources who wish to remain anonymous, certification for iPhone devices will have to be performed by authorized labs chosen and approved by Apple with … Read more

New Archos media players: Look out, iPhone?

Archos announced its 2007 lineup of media player/recorders today at press events in both Europe and New York, introducing four new portable models as well as the company's first set-top DVR.

Web 2.0 firms show mild enthusiasm for custom iPhone apps

Apple's non-announcement that those seeking to write applications for the iPhone can simply develop robust Web 2.0 applications instead has been met with guarded interest. While a few basic, AJAX-infused, hobby "applications" have been spawned (including a purportedly iPhone-optimized Digg interface and a shopping list organizer), the heavy-hitters of Web 2.0 have yet to make any serious commitments for development of customized iPhone programs.

We spoke with a few leading dynamic Web content developers about the prospect of creating custom iPhone "applications," and found that most are either waiting for more specifics on … Read more

Will iPhone be a Mom's Best Friend?

I've been drooling over the iPhone for months now. June 29th can't come fast enough for me. I have been an Apple user for almost 20 years now, going way back to my Macintosh 512 enhanced. In 2002, as soon as I saw an iPod I recognized it as a great tool for moms to "reclaim their mind space" by taking along their favorite music and podcasts with them on the go. The iPhone takes this a step further by combining a smart phone and mobile entertainment center in one device.

I am surprised we haven'… Read more
