Who's afraid of online video? Not Michael Eisner

NEW YORK--As head of Web video studio Vuguru, longtime entertainment exec Michael Eisner has been on a sort of tent-revival tour for the past few years, preaching the gospel of Internet video. On Thursday, his audience was the ad industry, and he was there to tell them not to be fazed by disappointing revenues on Web video.

"I'm seeding what I think will be a future business," Eisner explained. He's been vocal in admitting that online video isn't a profitable business yet. But it will be, he emphasized, and he wanted to position himself to … Read more

Internet Week New York's party scene off to a testosterone-fueled start

NEW YORK--Predatory women of the Samantha Jones variety would've done well to hightail it to Brooklyn on Wednesday night. Social news site Digg took over the massive Studio B nightclub for an Internet Week New York party and live taping of the Diggnation video podcast, and the place was filled almost exclusively with men under the age of 30. There were more getting turned away at the door. Ladies, I'm sure they could've used some hugs.

It was an event that the Silicon Alley Insider's Dan Frommer described as "two thousand sweaty dudes in a … Read more

New York Tech Meetup riffs on the state of the local industry

NEW YORK--Typically, the monthly New York Tech Meetup is an opportunity for the unpolished founders of brand-new local start-ups to go up onstage, talk about their companies for five minutes, and risk heckling from an audience of 400.

But for the Internet Week New York installment of the gathering on Tuesday evening, host (and Meetup.com founder) Scott Heiferman invited a handful of Gotham tech success stories to talk about the state of their companies. Needless to say, the presentations were a little bit slicker, and the "How're you going to make money?" question, a staple for … Read more

Glam CEO: Female audiences just 'our first target'

NEW YORK--Glam Media CEO Samir Arora showed up at ContentNext's EconAds conference on Tuesday afternoon looking dapper in brown leather shoes and a hot pink tie to match the handkerchief in his suit pocket. But really, he said, he runs a frugal company.

On his company's recent $84.6 million funding round, he said in an onstage interview with ContentNext's Rafat Ali, "We've really not spent that in anything so far." He added, "If you look at our history, we've raised $29.6 million to date before this round...we used less … Read more

Adify exec: Social networks eating away at CPM value

This post was corrected to clarify when Adify was purchased by Cox Enterprises.

NEW YORK--Some have said that because of the wealth of personal information they store, social networks are the future of online advertising. Russ Fradin, co-founder and president of Adify, disagrees.

"Social networks, to date, what they've really done is drive performance-based CPMs down a lot," Fradin said in reference to the fact that a CPM (clicks per thousand impressions) rate of a dollar used to be considered low, but thanks to the influence of social networks, it's as low as three cents.

Fradin … Read more

New York mayor's office kicks off Internet Week with launch of tech VC firm

NEW YORK--New York Mayor Michael P. Bloomberg wasn't kidding when he said he wanted Gotham to be a true global technology hub, and not just because municipal broadcast station NYC TV won its very first Webby Award this year.

At a press conference Monday evening, Bloomberg--himself a veteran of tech entrepreneurship--announced the debut of NYC Seed, a venture firm for early stage technology companies in the city. The event at Gracie Mansion, the mayor's official residence, kicked off Internet Week New York, a citywide festival of conferences, parties, and other events promoting the city's digital industries.

Internet Week New York revs up its (many) engines

Here's a tip for East Coast geeks who are gearing up for this week's Internet Week New York: Make a schedule. And leave room for last-minute additions.

The first citywide tribute to the Web revolution, sanctioned by the office of Mayor Michael Bloomberg and set to run June 3-10, isn't a cohesive weeklong event, nor is it a central nucleus with satellite events like the South by Southwest Interactive Festival or the city's own biannual Fashion Week. There are a few anchors like the Webby Awards ceremony, the Advertising 2.0 conference, and Federated Media's … Read more

Update: No special monetization plan for Facebook Connect, exec clarifies.

This post was updated at 1:21 p.m. PDT with comment from Tim Kendall.

NEW YORK--It would've been cool: Facebook director of monetization Tim Kendall hinted Monday that the company would offer "a product" to help third-party companies "accelerate" participation in its developer platform when asked whether the company had any plans to start directly monetizing the technology.

Since no further detail was provided, and Kendall had said that this would deal with "whether an application is within Facebook or outside of Facebook," this reporter inferred that he'd meant something involving … Read more

Exec: Ad industry must think small to tap social sites

NEW YORK--"Social media is killing Internet advertising," said Seth Goldstein, co-founder and CEO of SocialMedia Networks, as a roomful of ad-industry types at midtown Manhattan's Roosevelt Hotel put down their BlackBerrys and pulled out their pens and notebooks.

They were eager to hear Goldstein, whose keynote kicked off Monday's User-Generated Content and Social Media conference organized by the Interactive Advertising Bureau's IAB Leadership Forum. That's because nobody in the ad industry has figured out how to turn the social-networking craze into a real moneymaker. Silicon Valley-based SocialMedia, an ad network that touts itself … Read more
