Viewsonic offers affordable 26-inch display

Twnety-six-inch displays are not the most common size of monitor out there, but Viewsonic is doing their part in changing that. Today they announced the Viewsonic VA2626mw for a price of $530. This price makes it cheaper than Dell's 24-inch model, but still more expensive than some of the others we've reviewed. I mean you are getting two extra inches here, though...

You're also getting a DVI, VGA, and HDMI input for your video connection needs and two built-in 2.5-watt stereo speakers.

Viewsonic claims a native resolution of 1920x1200 and a dynamic contrast ratio of 6,… Read more

Asus announces DisplayLink monitors

Asus announced last week the release of two new monitors featuring DisplayLink technology. DisplayLink allows devices such as monitors and projectors to be connected to PC's solely through USB.

Asus is the latest manufacturer to take advantage of the technology with the announcement of these two new monitors, the VW223B and the VW202B. The VW223B is a 22-inch monitor available now with a native resolution of 1680x1050 and a contrast ratio of 3000:1 (it'll be interesting to see the methodology they used to get that number) and a 5ms response time.

The VW202B is a 20 inch … Read more

Charter drops controversial customer tracking plan

Internet service provider Charter Communications announced Tuesday that it was indefinitely suspending the use of a controversial tool to track its customers' movement on the Web.

Charter, the fourth-largest cable operator in the U.S., announced in May that it would use technology from a company called NebuAd to monitor some of its broadband customers' Internet habits to provide advertisers with information to target online ads to individual customers. Privacy advocates had likened the service to Internet wiretapping.

"Our customers are always our first priority," Charter said a statement. "As such, we are not moving forward with … Read more

BenQ unveils smallest full-HD monitor in its class

BenQ has introduced its new range of LCD monitors, among them one that it claims is the first 21.5-inch full high-definition panel with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

That would make its E2200HDA monitor the smallest LCD with a native full-HD (1080p) resolution in the market. Current full-HD panels start at 24-inch or larger. Additionally, the E2200HDA sports a 16:9 aspect ratio (1,920 x 1,080-pixel) display which is a better fit for full-HD content than the conventional 16:10 (1,920 x 1,200 pixels) found in most LCD monitors today.

To complement the panel's … Read more

108-inch Sharp LCD headed for U.S. market

It often takes awhile for Japanese electronics to make their way across the Pacific, if they get here at all. But Sharp bucked that trend in a big way, literally, by saying its 108-inch LCD would be shipping to U.S. shores by September.

Only last week this beast made its first commercial appearance at Tokyo's Shinjuku Piccadilly multiplex complex, all 93.9 inches by 52.9 inches of it in full-HD 1080p resolution. Now the LB-1085 super-monitor will be intimidating Americans as well, and not just because of its imposing stature: The price, by Engadget's calculations, will … Read more

3D video without the goofy glasses

The next big thing after extremely high-resolution displays is, of course, 3D technology. And we're not talking about those dated 3D glasses of yesteryear, as proven by French company Alioscopy here at CommunicAsia in Singapore. Onsite and attracting quite a crowd is its $10,526 40-inch 3D monitor capable of reproducing the same enticing visual depth without cumbersome glasses.

The trick lies in an optical filter-coated panel and specially encoded 3D videos, derived from eight independent points of view, with up to a staggering bandwidth of 9GB per minute. The 3D footage can be premixed before playback or processed … Read more

Asus puts 22-inch monitor on a crash diet

Sharp may brag about its 108-inch display, but Asus is seeking a different claim to fame: The company says it is releasing "the world's slimmest 22-inch widescreen LCD monitor."

Regardless of whether the claim is true--we've made our opinion known about "world's first" statements in general--there's no denying that this monitor is anorexically thin. Despite an apparent typo in the press release, as Engadget points out, this TV measures less than an inch deep--0.97 inches, to be exact. That would be more than a third slimmer than Hitachi's 1.5-inch modelRead more

LG claims world's greenest LCD

If eco-friendly features replace the endless stream of thinnest, smallest, and lightest "in the world" claims on the technology market, we'll be very happy campers. And for that reason alone it's worth mentioning the latest boast from LG about its new computer monitor.

The Korean company says its "Flatron W2252TE" is "the world's most energy-efficient monitor," according to our cousins across the pond at SmartPlanet. The 22-inch widescreen LCD, which is headed for the U.K. market, supposedly uses 40 fewer watts to operate than do comparable monitors--an energy saving of … Read more

Crib monitor goes beyond sight, sound

Baby monitors have come a long way in the last decade, as manufacturers try everything from designer models to night-vision cameras to distance themselves from the crowd. But BebeSounds has an entirely different way of keeping tabs on your baby--by movement instead of only sight or sound.

The "Angelcare Movement Sensor" tracks movements through a wireless pad under the crib's mattress. The pad's sensors detect movement (or lack thereof) and send the data to nearby transmitters, which in turn provide audio and visual information for a remote device that parents can carry around the house.

A scale for the Iron Man in your family

Those callous souls who gave their poor mums a Wii Fit for Mother's Day should take note: They can even the score between parents by giving a similarly subtle hint to dad this weekend. But why not be a little more creative?

Tanita is pushing its "BC-558 Tanita Ironman Segmental and Full Body Composition Monitor" as an ideal Father's Day gift. It's especially useful for those vain fathers who spend too much time at the gym and flexing in the bathroom mirror, because this scale measures the body by segments--as in arms, legs, and the … Read more
