Get a 19-inch widescreen LCD with speakers and HDMI for $139.99

Looking for a second monitor? Or an LCD for the den or bedroom? Best Buy has a Hannspree 19-inch widescreen on sale for $139.99 -- and no rebates! You can also avoid shipping charges by picking it up in-store, though you will have to pay sales tax.

Normally I wouldn't get too amped about a 19-inch monitor, but this one has two big perks: built-in speakers and an HDMI interface (VGA, too). That means you could connect, say, a Blu-ray player or Xbox 360, or even an HD cable box. And because the monitor has a maximum resolution … Read more

Expand your screen estate with 22-inch LCD monitor, $179.99 (after rebate)

Hey, remember that 22-inch LCD monitor for $199 from a couple weeks ago? Phhhbbblllttttt. Office Depot has an Acer 22-incher on sale for $179.99, though you do have to wait on a $60 mail-in rebate.

The Acer AL2216WBD offers fairly standard specs, including 1680x1050 native resolution, 5ms response time, and 700:1 contrast ratio. It sports both VGA and DVI connectors, and the latter is HDCP-compliant, meaning you'll have no trouble viewing Blu-ray movies if your PC or notebook has a Blu-ray drive.

CNET's reviewer and 26 users all rated the monitor 3.5 stars out of 5, … Read more

Expand your desktop with a 22-inch LCD monitor, $199.98 shipped

Still squinting at that 17-inch LCD? Get your space on (no idea what that means) with the ViewSonic OptiQuest Q2201wb, a 22-inch LCD that's on sale for $199.98. (Click the PC Connection link on the right when you get to the product page.) Shipping is included, and you don't have to deal with any pesky rebates.

This is a fairly basic widescreen monitor, offering 1680x1050 native resolution and a zippy 5ms response time. It has only a VGA interface, so if your desktop has only DVI outputs, you'll need a VGA-to-DVI adapter (which you can pick … Read more

Go wide with a 22-inch LCD monitor, $189

Anytime I find a 22-inch LCD for under $200, you can bet I'll post it here. eCost has the manufacturer-recertified Samsung 220WM for $189, quite a bit less than you'd pay for a new one.

Highlights include built-in speakers, a 700:1 contrast ratio (that's according to Samsung's specs--eCost mistakenly lists it as 1000:1), and support for HDCP (meaning you can watch Blu-ray movies and other protected digital content--something not all monitors allow). Alas, connectivity is limited to VGA and DVI; no HDMI here. Like most 22-inchers, the 220WM tops out at 1680x1050 resolution.… Read more

Get a 22-inch widescreen LCD for $179.99

It's rare enough to find a 22-inch LCD for $200, but $179.99? That's a steal. And that's TigerDirect's price on the refurbished Gateway FPD2275W. Best of all, there's no rebate: $179.99 is your out-the-door price (plus about $17 for shipping).

Spec-wise, the monitor seems pretty solid. It offers a native resolution of 1680x1050, a 5ms response time (important for games, movies, and other fast-moving video), VGA and HDCP-compliant DVI inputs, and even a 4-port USB hub. CNET rated the monitor pretty highly, but found fault with its short warranty.

Unfortunately, the warranty on … Read more

Rethinking the all-in-one DVD player

Talk about good timing. Just yesterday we wrote of a rather unusual media player that stored a proverbial boatload of videos but had no screen to show them on. Now the perfect companion has emerged: a "hybrid" DVD player and 19-inch widescreen display.

This dual-purpose device from U.K.-based Touch Interactive is a lot sleeker and more portable than other DVD combos, as it was designed specifically not to look like products that have come to market. It could probably be outfitted with a tuner to turn it into a TV as well. But maybe the timing … Read more

Cowon A3 PVP gets U.S. price and availability

Cowon, purveyor of the most feature-packed MP3 players in the world, has announced the U.S. pricing and availability of its A3 portable video player (PVP), successor to the highly rated A2. According to Cowon, the first shipments of the A3 (pictured above) are due to arrive in early December, priced at $349 (30GB) and $399 (60GB) for the U.S.

From a video perspective, the A3 features a 4-inch TFT LCD display with an 800x480 resolution and integrated component, S-Video, and composite video output. Like most Cowon players, the A3 natively supports an astounding array of file formats and codecs, including video formats such as… Read more

Video watch gets a 'big' screen

The makers of a video wristwatch we cited awhile back are apparently benevolent types who don't want us to go blind squinting at a 1.5-inch screen. So Chinavasion has come out with a new model that ups the size of its color LCD to a whopping 1.8 inches.

As Technabob notes, it's impossible to call this a widescreen display with a straight face, but it does claim a full 16:9 ratio for MP4 viewing, as well as MP3 playback and an FM radio. (Whether it actually tells time is unclear.)

We're not sure how … Read more
