Today the iPhone is the alpha gizmo, the one item of consumer electronics that dominates all the others.

But in 1993, the hot new gizmo was Apple's Newton, and it was a whole different thing.

Not very many people had Newtons. Apple sold fewer Newtons over the whole life of the product than it sold iPhones the evening of June 29.

Apple will begin selling the iPhone on Friday, but I'm not buying one.

It isn't that I don't like Apple hardware. I'm typing this on a MacBook Pro I bought last November. I have a stack of older PowerBooks (lit er ally), a couple of iPods (one dead, alas), and a Power Mac G5.

It's official: Palm Treo 755p lands at Sprint

We can finally put all the rumors to rest--the Palm Treo 755p is real, and it's officially arrived on Sprint's doorstep, looking all dapper in burgundy or midnight blue, might we add. New Sprint Treo 750 could be just days away

So, there I was, on the phone with a Sprint rep, chatting about my cell phone bill and the possibility of signing a new, two-year contract, when something funny happened: I got to hear about a couple of rumored new phones that hadn't been officially announced. About a month ago, we told you of some rumors about the Palm Treo 755p headed for Sprint. Neither Palm nor Sprint unveiled such a device at CTIA 2007, but if we're to believe the latest pictures that have surfaced on the Web, the Treo 755p is alive and kicking. SlingPlayer for PalmOS unveiled

The PalmOS version of the SlingPlayer Mobile software is now available as a public beta at Sling Media's Web site. The initial version of the Palm software is designed to run only on the Palm Treo 700p. The new software adds Palm to the list of supported platforms to which Slingbox products can stream home TV programming. To date, SlingPlayer viewing software has already been released for Windows (2000, XP, and Vista) and Mac OS X (Intel and PowerPC) computers and Windows Mobile handhelds and smartphones. Look out! AT&T/Cingular is painting the town red as they officially introduced the red RIM BlackBerry Pearl and the crimson Palm Treo 680 today. Palm Treo 700wx finally lands at Verizon

Boy, are Palm Treo 700w owners going to be miffed. Today, Verizon Wireless and Palm announced the availability of the Palm Treo 700wx, which is almost identical to its predecessor except for one key difference: it ups the 700w's paltry 32MB of RAM to 64MB, clearing the way for snappier performance. Aside from the increased memory, there aren't any major differences or upgrades (ahem, Windows Mobile 6) from the Treo 700w or Sprint's version of the 700wx.
