My Newton story

Today the iPhone is the alpha gizmo, the one item of consumer electronics that dominates all the others.

But in 1993, the hot new gizmo was Apple's Newton, and it was a whole different thing.

Not very many people had Newtons. Apple sold fewer Newtons over the whole life of the product than it sold iPhones the evening of June 29.

Also unlike the iPhone, the first Newtons weren't even very useful. Although called "personal digital assistants" (PDAs), using a Newton was significantly more difficult than using a Day-Timer. The original MessagePad had very poor handwriting … Read more

Why I'm not getting an iPhone next week

Apple will begin selling the iPhone on Friday, but I'm not buying one.

It isn't that I don't like Apple hardware. I'm typing this on a MacBook Pro I bought last November. I have a stack of older PowerBooks (literally), a couple of iPods (one dead, alas), and a Power Mac G5.

It isn't that I don't like to buy new toys. I just counted: I carry around ten battery-powered devices every day, four of which are less than six months old.

But I don't need a new phone, especially not … Read more

It's official: Palm Treo 755p lands at Sprint

We can finally put all the rumors to rest--the Palm Treo 755p is real, and it's officially arrived on Sprint's doorstep, looking all dapper in burgundy or midnight blue, might we add. The 755p will be available starting May 14 and replaces the older Treo 700p. The Palm-based smart phone not only sports a more compact form factor similar to that of its GSM cousin, the Treo 680, but it also brings a collection of small but notable enhancements--instant messaging and Google Maps for Mobile, just to name two. But are the extras enough to warrant the expensive $… Read more

New Sprint Treo 750 could be just days away

So, there I was, on the phone with a Sprint rep, chatting about my cell phone bill and the possibility of signing a new, two-year contract, when something funny happened: I got to hear about a couple of rumored new phones that hadn't been officially announced. The rep suggested I apply my $150 signing bonus to the new Treo 750, which was, "just days away."

I have the Sprint PPC 6700, an HTC device, and have been eagerly anticipating its successor, which is supposed to be slimmer and offer better battery life. So, I asked, "Any … Read more

More evidence of a Palm Treo 755p for Sprint

About a month ago, we told you of some rumors about the Palm Treo 755p headed for Sprint. Neither Palm nor Sprint unveiled such a device at CTIA 2007, but if we're to believe the latest pictures that have surfaced on the Web, the Treo 755p is alive and kicking. Engadget Mobile has posted several images of the supposed Treo 755p, sporting the same slim and external-antenna-free body style as the Palm Treo 680 and the Treo 750. Also like the latter, the Treo 755p appears to have a dark-blue casing, though Palm Infocenter claims Sprint will offer a … Read more

The PalmOS version of the SlingPlayer Mobile software is now available as a public beta at Sling Media's Web site. Additionally, a Symbian version of the SlingPlayer is preinstalled on some phones available … Read more

Palm GPS Navigator Car Kit finds its way to CTIA 2007

New Treos these are not, but Palm did have some news to share at CTIA 2007. Today, the company introduced a number of hands-free car solutions, including the Palm GPS Navigator Car Kit for the Treo 750 and the Treo 680, as well as some new cases (umm, yay?).

The Palm GPS Navigator Kit is specifically made for the new, slimmer Treos (other Treo owners can get the same solution from the Palm GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition) and features a cradle with an integrated GPS receiver and a speakerphone--just snap your Treo 680 or Treo 750 into place, and you … Read more

Seeing red: AT&T/Cingular introduces red BlackBerry Pearl and Treo 680

Look out! AT&T/Cingular is painting the town red as they officially introduced the red RIM BlackBerry Pearl and the crimson Palm Treo 680 today. The Pearl will sport a dark ruby red casing, rather than the blinding hue we had feared earlier. It'll also be the first phone to sport the new AT&T branding. Aside from the cosmetic changes, the blushing smart phone keeps all the features of the original BlackBerry Pearl, including push e-mail, multimedia functions, and push-to-talk capabilities. The red Pearl is available starting today; prices start at $199.99 with a … Read more

Palm reader: What's in the future for Palm?

Now, we're not ones to gossip (OK, yes we are) but there are a ton of rumors floating around the Internet about the future of Palm. Frankly, the stories have been so fast and furious over the past several days, it's all a bit dizzying. Kind of like whether Britney is in or out of rehab, but I digress. Getting back to the topic at hand, here's what we've heard so far, and remember these are just rumors at this point.

Palm Treo 700wx finally lands at Verizon

Boy, are Palm Treo 700w owners going to be miffed. Today, Verizon Wireless and Palm announced the availability of the Palm Treo 700wx, which is almost identical to its predecessor except for one key difference: it ups the 700w's paltry 32MB of RAM to 64MB, clearing the way for snappier performance. Aside from the increased memory, there aren't any major differences or upgrades (ahem, Windows Mobile 6) from the Treo 700w or Sprint's version of the 700wx. The Windows Mobile 5 smart phone has push e-mail capabilities, EV-DO support, a 1.3-megapixel camera, and Bluetooth. The Palm … Read more
