Video library tool

Manage Your Videos 2009 provides users with a simple program to catalog their movie collection. While we would have liked to see a few tweaks, this is an easy program that practically anyone can utilize.

The program's interface will surely require a trip to the Help file. There isn't much onscreen direction about the command icons or the cluttered video library screen. Thankfully, a little experimenting will make this program feel like second nature. In order to populate their library, users must input a lot of data, which is our only gripe with the program. Users must fill … Read more

First full-size Shure headphones make U.S. debut

Last month, Shure announced its first foray into the full-size headphone space, but the scope of availability was limited to the U.K. Now, the company is introducing the cans in the U.S. market--a move that's sure to please Shure fans based in the States.

Unlike the company's established in-ear line, the circumaural sets are geared toward at-home listening, particularly for novice DJs and others who are passionate about music but can't afford the professional models on the market. The new line includes three sets, which are outlined below.

Simple but effective

Not all programs need to have tons of bells and whistles to be effective. TreeSize Free proves this point. Its approach and set up are as simple as it gets but it gives users detailed information regarding available free space on their computers.

This free program's user interface couldn't be easier to navigate. All you do is select a folder or a hard disk to scan and the program goes to work, quickly displaying the amount of space programs and files are taking up. Using the intuitive command buttons at the top of the window, you can choose … Read more

See what's eating your space

With a no-nonsense interface, this little utility puts most of its functionality right at your fingertips, enabling you to discover via lists and charts which files and folders on your drive are consuming most of the space. With tasteful icons and toolbars, it is at once functional and intuitive.

There is certainly no shortage of options for tailoring the generated lists, from the standard file/folder list to a list by "Size range," showing, for example, how many files are between 1K and 16K in size. Also, some operations are limited to the currently selected directory and its … Read more

Big TVs good! Big speakers bad?

Yeah, I get it, big displays garner oohs and aahs; but why are big speakers always portrayed as hideous things only an audiophile could love?

Thing is, tiny speakers cheat you out of more than half the experience. On a return-on-investment basis, home audio is more accurate than video. A 50-inch display may be sharp and clear, but it can't approach the majestic scale of a movie theater screen. A decent home theater sound system will blow away most movie theater systems.

How large is a large speaker? For the purpose of this blog, 20-inch high bookshelf speakers with … Read more

Add page numbers to half-size pages in Word

Jdjazz asked me to elaborate on a previous tip about formatting Word documents with two columns:

"I am trying to do a landscape two-column template with page numbers for each column [on] half sheets that I cut for speaking. When I choose Insert > Page number, it goes to the center in the headers over the two columns. How can I get a page number for each half page?"

In Word 2007, click the Page Layout tab, choose Size in the Page Setup area, and click More Paper Sizes at the bottom of the dialog box. In Word … Read more

See the real size of gadgets with Pective

Say you're shopping for laptops online and you're trying to figure out how big one is just by its product photo and measurements. It's not easy is it?

If you can't make it to a retailer to get your grubby mitts on it, there's a new solution called Pective. Like Sizeasy, which I checked out last year, the site is set up to help consumers find out the general size of something based on its measurements. In Pective's case, the tool goes one step further by using product photos and scaling them to match … Read more

eSATA comes to a pocket-size external hard drive

I asked for it a few blogs ago and now I've got it: the first pocket-size external hard drive that features an eSATA connection, the eSATA OWC Mercury On-The-Go. eSATA is the external interface for SATA, currently the most popular interface for internal hard drives.

A while ago, OWC introduced the world's largest small external had drive and has now become the first vendor to put eSATA on a compact external hard drive. The eSATA OWC Mercury On-The-Go also supports USB 2.0 and features a 320GB internal hard drive from Hitachi that spins at 7200rpm (as opposed … Read more
