MySpace, Skype to partner for voice function on IM client

MySpace and Skype are set to announce on Wednesday that the eBay-owned telephony client will be providing voice chat services for the News Corp.-owned social network's instant messaging client, MySpaceIM. Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed.

Through this deal, MySpace users will be able to link their profiles to Skype accounts, and will be able to place voice chat calls through the MySpaceIM client or the Skype client to both Skype and MySpace members--but if your MySpace profile is set to "private," you will be exempt from calls from people who aren't on … Read more

Mixx launching public beta, rolling out content partnerships

An earlier version of this blog incorrectly stated some of Mixx's content partnerships.

Mixx, a social-news site that Webware covered last month, is poised to launch its public beta on Tuesday, along with the first of a number of content partnerships with news outlets.

The site has been in an invitation-only private beta for some time now, and it is attempting to rise above the crowded niche of social news by providing a community-focused service and more ways to customize the news to fit your own interests and preferences.

Mixx differs from social-news leaders like Digg in that instead … Read more

Twitter goes to the MTV Video Music Awards

Could this finally be what breaks Twitter out of the early-adopter geek set and into the population at large? The microblogging service has partnered with the inarguably mainstream MTV for its upcoming Video Music Awards (or VMAs), according to an e-mail sent to Twitter members by founder Biz Stone.

So far, the partnership isn't totally clear. A Twitter account has been set up for the VMA "Moon Man" mascot, the pop-culture awards' equivalent of the Oscar statue. In Stone's e-mail, he elaborated that the VMA Twittering will expand, too: "(MTV has) some fun ideas which … Read more

ThinkFree to partner with EditGrid

Tomorrow, ThinkFree is announcing a partnership with EditGrid to integrate EditGrid's spreadsheet service into ThinkFree's Web-based office suite. EditGrid's free, Web-based spreadsheet service will take the place of ThinkFree's Quick Edit Calc application. Both services are Webware 100 nominees in the Productivity category.

With the partnership comes a profit-sharing agreement between the two companies; however, the real icing on the cake is for ThinkFree users who will get to use EditGrid without having to sign up to another service.

While it's not a merger or an acquisition, the last memorable integration of two popular online … Read more

Joost partners with Creative Arts Agency

Joost has announced another partnership--but this one's a little different than the seemingly endless announcements of niche TV deals that the much-hyped Web video start-up has been rolling out over the past few months. This time, Joost will be partnering with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a talent and literary agency with offices in Los Angeles, New York, Nashville, and several international locations. Through this deal, the CAA--which represents industries from TV to theater to video games to sports--will help Joost secure more content for distribution.

In other words, it's a partnership that will optimally lead to more … Read more

YouTube + BBC partnership

YouTube is now featuring content from the BBC in the form of two new branded channels, one for BBC local programming, and another for popular television programs on their BBC Worldwide network. A channel with daily clips from BBC News is soon to follow. The BBC won't be offering its programming in its entirety, just promotional clips like extra scenes, previews, recaps, and production diaries.

In light of this, I'd like to see the BBC move to something similar to what American networks have been doing, offering full versions of their content on their Web sites with supplemental … Read more

AOL ditches music download service to partner with Napster

AOL. Napster. Partnership. Imagine if those three words had been put together in a sentence way back in 1999. It would've been something out of The Onion: AOL was the massive, dominant corporate giant, and Napster was pretty much a bunch of punks who were raising hell. But times change, and companies change, and today AOL has announced that it has inked a deal with the music subscription service--formerly synonymous with cyber-piracy--as the power behind the download service on its AOL Music site.

Napster will be replacing the AOL MusicNow subscription download service, which AOL had been operating since … Read more
