Flight of the Panda

An Israeli company has conducted the first in a series of test flights on the Panda, a new ducted-fan, unmanned aerial vehicle prototype that looks kind of like a flying stretcher, bringing us closer to what could be the ultimate medivac.

The company, Urban Aeronautics, already produces the Mule UAV and the X-Hawk, larger versions that can be configured for front-line resupply, medical evacuation, utility maintenance, taxi, high-rise rescue, and probably window cleaning. (See video)

The technology is based on the "classic ducted designed pioneered in the early 1960s," as the company Web site points out. This model … Read more

What to do with the leftover CD: Sit on it

What do you do when you have way too many CD coasters lying around in the house? The idea must have plagued designer Belen Hermosa as well, with the result being the "Panda Chair."

While we're all for the recycle and reuse movement, we're guessing this one would just replace those neck and back aches with new pains in your butt and thighs. Still, it's an interesting intepretation of a computer chair--just one that might be better appreciated from afar.

DigitalLife 2007 brings tech toy favorites

NEW YORK--While DigitalLife 2007 did see a better turnout than last year according to those who attended both, there wasn't all that much in terms of new tech toys at the show.

Lots of favorites simply continued to make the digital world rounds.

The R2D2 television projector from Nikko was set up to play the famous lightsaber sequences scenes from the Star Wars films.

Lots of people were playing with the Novint Falcon at the Novint Technologies booth. The company announced Thursday that the 3D game controller would be available at CompUSA stores this October for about $239.

Wacom Graphire gets new nom de plume: Bamboo

In technology circles, hitting the quarter-century mark makes you positively ancient. That may be the impetus behind Wacom's decision to update its logo at the same time as it jettisons the Graphire brand for consumer pen tablets, redesigning and rechristening them with the trendier moniker "Bamboo."

Two models launch the series. The Bamboo Fun--doesn't it cry out for an exclamation point?--targets the popular growth segment of project-oriented imaging enthusiasts largely defined by scrapbookers. It comes in two sizes and four colors--black, white, silver, and an electric blue--and features big, friendly looking programmable buttons and a … Read more

A mouse that pandas can love

Computer equipment made of wood is certainly nothing new, but our eco-blogger sensibilities compel us to take note whenever we find an item made of our favorite enviro-friendly casing material: bamboo.

To that end, today we offer this bamboo optical mouse in a polished natural finish, made of a hard variety that Red Ferret says is "panda-friendly." Pandas eat only soft bamboo, apparently, so they're not threatened by the harvesting of this type of vegetation.

If you stick with Crave long enough, you'll pick up all manner of trivia like this. Tomorrow: South American marsupials.

Massive Web attack gains momentum

Over the weekend, thousands of legitimate English-language Italian Web sites fell victim to one line of code. Taking advantage of the trust the users have in the sites they visit, the malicious code silently redirects browsers via JavaScript to servers containing a variety of drive-by exploits. If the visiting computer is unpatched for a variety of operating system, browser, and specific application flaws, malicious code is downloaded. Once installed, the new software can then be used to steal personal information or enlist a compromised machine in attacks on other machines. According to security vendor Websense, the attack now affects over … Read more

Digital tablet is bamboo in name only

What a letdown. When we first heard the name of Wacom's new digital tablet, the "Bamboo," we were hoping for something like the wooden laptops and DVD players we've lusted after. Alas, it appears to be made of standard manufactured materials, attractive enough but nothing like a bamboo TV. But enough about our sylvan fetish.

The touch tablet, which Technabob says is designed for consumer use, appears to be the successor to Wacom's "Graphire" line with some updates such as four "express" keys and a familiar-looking scroll ring. It's supposed … Read more

All bamboo, all the time

Just a few hours ago we were convinced that wood was taking over the gadget world, but we may have to refine that a bit--perhaps it's just bamboo. Gizmodo notes that it's been a banner day for the sylvan species: Not only did we point to Crave UK's sneak peek at Asus' bamboo laptops, but the eco-friendly wood has been used to make a 19-inch LCD TV as well from Playengine, which is based in the U.K. (hence the soccer--sorry, futbol--players on screen). It may not have the hottest specs but, hey, you can tell people … Read more
