A USB motorbike engine for the desktop

The people at Japan's SolidAlliance are apparently as hard-working as their products are diverse. Think about it: This is the same company that produces disco ball mice, gold USB drives and UFO detectors. And those are only the things we know about.

What could possibly top those acts? Try a desktop replica of a motorcycle engine, complete with vibration and sound effects. You can even control the revs of the USB-powered engine hub by pushing the kick pedal, according to Fareastgizmos--perfect for that final stretch at work as you head toward the finish line for Miller time. This motorbike is green if not mean

Don't get us wrong: We loved the Michael Dukakis-style ride on an electric scooter that fellow Craver Michael Kanellos took in his video adventure yesterday. But the little red bike won't do a whole lot for your Wild Hogs image, now will it?

If you want to hit the road in all black but also stay green, the "Stealth" motorcycle from Hybrid Technologies may be a more appropriate choice. TechEBlog says the bike only has a top speed of 50 miles per hour, but it looks a lot closer to a Harley than Michael's Maxi-Scooter. (… Read more

Electric motorcycle smashes records

The KillaCycle, an all-electric motorcycle, is now the fastest electric vehicle of all time.

At a drag race in Chandler, Ariz., the bike completed a quarter mile in 8.168 seconds, breaking the six-year-old record of 8.801 held by Dennis Berube with an electric car for more than six years. The bike cranked it up to 155.87 miles an hour. Even more impressive, it hit this level of performance twice, on April 3 and April 4.

The bike is powered by 990 lithium ion cells from A123 Systems, a Massachusetts start-up that is also making batteries for General … Read more

Intel inside: The motorcycle

Intel may have been around for only half as long as Ferrari, but that doesn't mean it can't pull out the stops for its own special-edition creation. And what better way to celebrate the birth of a California company than with a commemorative motorcycle?

Gizmowatch says the chipmaking pioneer has created two custom motorbikes--one in real nuts and bolts, the other virtually for Second Life. The brick-and-mortar version, not surprisingly, showcases various examples of Intel's embedded technologies, including an automated dashboard that doubles as a PC and video screens instead of rear-view mirrors. It's also … Read more

The hard-drive motorcycle

There was a time when people would collect America Online CDs for various art projects, but that got old. There was only so much you could do when working with materials of that size. Hard disks are an entirely different matter, however, as TechEBlog proves with this post on a "Hard Drive Platter Motorcycle" from some guy who obviously has far too much time on his hands. If you think this was a silly waste of time, consider this: It's more productive than setting up hard drive dominoes.

Y-shaped motorcycle is a different kind of hybrid

Gizmag is gushing over the 2008 Can-Am Spyder roadster that was recently unveiled by Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), the Canadian motorcycle, ATV and snowmobile manufacturer.

Unlike other hybrid vehicles that tout stealth, satellite navigation or energy efficiency, this vehicle claims to be the offspring of a motorcycle and a sports car.

The three-wheel motorcycle has rear wheel drive, with two wheels at the front and one at the back. The trike is powered by a Rotax 990 V-twin liquid-cooled engine with a five-speed manual transmission.

It has antilock breaks, traction control and dynamic power steering as on a car. The … Read more

Motorbike gets monster truck engine

No, we don't know why someone would want to outfit a motorcycle with a monster truck engine, but that's not important. There are even larger questions in life, such as why anyone would want to build a 31-foot motorbike. (Crave tends to ponder existential questions on the weekend.)

Regardless of the reasons, the two-wheeled "Rapom" is equipped with an 8.2-liter supercharged V8 engine, according to Spluch. Its Dr. Frankstein wannabe creator says the bike was the unholy offspring of "the unusual marriage of convenience and nativete."

The world's longest motorcycle

Stretch limos are for wimps. If you really want to make a statement, check out the "world's longest motorcycle," which Red Ferret says measures a full 31 feet and 4 inches.

The bike was created by a Russian inventor named Oleg Rogov who reportedly died this summer in an accident. According to the blog English Russia, he was inspired to build it "probably after he got too much beer inside."

The decadent Ducati debuts

Why is it that when it comes to speed, all the best stuff seems to come out in Europe first? The latest example: The new 2007 Ducati 1098 Superbike, which was unveiled at the 2006 EICMA International Milan Motorbike Show in Italy.

The company announced U.S. and Canadian pricing for the new Ducati 1098 Superbike on its Web site last week. The 2007 Ducati 1098 Superbike will go for $14,999, the 1098 S for $19,995 and the limited edition 1098 S Tri-Color for $24,995.

The bike, whose body style is similar to the 916, makes 160 … Read more
