Find your iOS device with this app

Find My Phone is a free app that can help you locate your missing iPhone 4, iPad, or fourth-generation iPod Touch, and it can even remotely lock or wipe all data from the device. This free, app-assisted service (which requires iOS 4.2, as well as setting up a MobileMe Free account) was previously available only to paid MobileMe subscribers.

Not surprisingly, you will likely never use this app from your device itself, but rather from your Mac (you just go to me.com/find in your browser) or from another device (one that you own, or a friend's--any … Read more

Apple releasing iOS 4.2 today

Apple is launching iOS 4.2 today.

The company announced that its latest operating system update for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users will be available today, though the software was not yet available for download at 7:00 a.m. PT on Apple's site or directly through iTunes. MacStories and MacWorld are reporting that iOS 4.2 will debut by 10:00 a.m. PT.

The eagerly awaited update will bring to the iPad new features that already hit the iPhone and iPod Touch through last summer's iOS 4.0 release.

iPad users will now be able … Read more

Find your iPad/iPhone/iPod for free (if you have the latest version)

File this under "it should have been free all along." Apple's "Find my iPhone" feature, previously a feature of the subscription-based MobileMe service, is now free--with a catch: it's only free for users of the iPhone 4, iPad, or newest fourth-generation iPod Touch.

That means that while many iDevices--be they iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch--can be updated to iOS 4.2, only the most recent versions of each will get the free "Find my iPhone" functionality.

The service finds your iPhone, if by "find" you mean "get a rough … Read more

Mozilla develops social skills with F1

As Flock and RockMelt duked it out for social-networking addicts' attention, browser kingpin Mozilla quietly introduced last week a new add-on for Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail users. Called F1 (download) and created by Mozilla Messaging, the division of Mozilla that manages the e-mail client Thunderbird, the secure and unobtrusive add-on provides fast sharing of URLs via a dedicated navigation bar button. It mimics one of the best features found in social-networking browsers without having to deal with hassle of switching browsers, although the add-on is definitely still a bit rough.

Once installed, F1 will create a button on the right … Read more

The art behind Pixar's long run of hits

OAKLAND, Calif.--"Computers don't create computer animation any more than a pencil creates pencil animation. What creates computer animation are artists."

Those words would ring true no matter who said them, but in this case, the source has just about the highest possible credibility on the issue at hand: John Lasseter, the chief creative officer for both Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios, and the director of four of Pixar's most loved films.

Lasseter's words hang high on a wall in the Oakland Museum of California here, where the exhibit "Pixar: 25 Years of Animation&… Read more

Find that file easily

EasyFind is a useful freeware search tool that can be a substitute for--or, more likely, supplement to--Spotlight in the Mac OS.

Spotlight has made great strides in recent years, but its lack of speed and specificity can still leave some users frustrated--especially older Mac users who miss pre-Spotlight standalone search apps like Sherlock. EasyFind is a more blunt search tool, and unlike Spotlight, it doesn't index your hard drive. That means it searches your entire hard drive (or whatever location you specify) from scratch every time you enter a query, and it lets you set quite a few parameters … Read more

Man finds lost iPad with iPod

Some may wonder how anyone could possibly leave something like an iPad on an airplane. Well, as parents know, it could happen very easily when there are children around to care for (and be distracted by).

That's exactly what happened to Curtis Cogdill and his wife on a recent flight from Sacramento, Calif., to Portland, Ore., according to a report on CNN. In the hustle and bustle of getting themselves and their baby off the plane, they forgot their iPad.

After some discussion as to whose fault it was, Cogdill used his iPod Touch and Apple's Find My iPhoneRead more

Can you Kayak a marathon--or a jail?

It became a bit of a joke at the height of Web 2.0 speculation that entrepreneurs would scramble to craft an elevator pitch as "a Facebook for this" or "a Digg for that." (See also: ItsThisForThat.com.) Well, one start-up believes that it can be "a Kayak for everything"--and, really, that is actually the best way to describe it.

It's called FindTheBest, and it has made it its task to create a comparison app for everything--from jails (you can compare prisons by capacity percent, or by number of juveniles held as … Read more

Chrome users, looking for that great band?

Originally a Firefox add-on, FindThatBand has gone Chrome. Instead of hopelessly searching for music within the endless black hole which is the Web, Google Chrome users can now find their favorite bands by highlighting text.

To find the band, simply highlight its name and hit CTRL twice. A pop-up will instantly appear with a list of 11 music resource sites. This list consists of MySpace, Last.fm, Pandora, Wikipedia, Hype Machine, Amazon, iTunes, Discogs, allmusic, iLike, and Grooveshark. (Last.fm is a CBS site, as is CNET.) Between all of these sites, it is highly likely that you will find … Read more

Backup time machine

Regular system backups are a matter of emphasis for us, and we like them thorough and often. Windows' built-in system recovery and backup utilities do a pretty decent job, but like many built-in features, they have their limitations, and they can be confusing and even daunting for many users, especially those who need them the most. There are more third-party backup utilities than you can shake a Registry at, however, each offering a different combination of power, flexibility, and ease of use. MagiCure Professional 9 from AdvantEDGE Solutions is aimed at less-experienced users, since its goal is to simplify the … Read more
