Diagnostic and usage data collection in OS X 10.6.3

When applications crash or are forced to quit during a hang in OS X, the system will bring up a crash reporter window that contains diagnostic information about your system, which applications were open, and memory traces for the threads that were open. This information allows developers to troubleshoot and fix bugs in their programs that may have led to the crash. When presented, you will have the option to send the report to Apple along with comments about what you were doing, or dismiss the message without sending.… Read more

Chrome bug kills offline Gmail

A bug in Thursday's update to the development build of Google Chrome renders it incompatible with Gmail offline. Users who've had Gmail and Chrome configured for offline use will find that Chrome crashes as soon as you log in to Gmail. The problem affects all development versions of the browser.

Right now there are only two ways around the bug. You can disable offline mode in Chrome by going to Options/Under the Hood and clearing out the Gmail-related entries under ''Change Gears settings''. This will delete all offline data from Gmail that you've saved on your … Read more

Malware crashed systems during Windows security updates

Windows systems that crashed during the latest Microsoft security update last week did so because they were infected with a rootkit program that made changes to the operating system kernel, Microsoft said late on Wednesday.

"The restarts are the result of modifications the Alureon rootkit makes to Windows Kernel binaries, which places these systems in an unstable state," Mike Reavey, director of the Microsoft Security Response Center, wrote in a blog post. "In every investigated incident, we have not found quality issues with security update MS10-015."

The patch addresses a vulnerability in the 32-bit Windows kernel … Read more

Palo Alto plane crash creates Wi-Fi thirst (podcast)

The crash of a small plane in East Palo Alto, Calif., brought down lines that supply power to much of Palo Alto, which is home to Facebook, Hewlett-Packard, and this reporter.

Knowing that Google provides free Wi-Fi to most of nearby Mountain View, I grabbed my laptop and headed for the Mountain View Starbucks nearest to Palo Alto, but it was standing room only thanks to other Palo Alto refugees in search of Wi-Fi and coffee. My next stop was LeBloulanger, a cafe and bakery near the center of town. The Google signal is weak, but the cafe offers its … Read more

Three Tesla employees dead in small-plane crash

Reuters

A small airplane crashed and killed three Tesla Motors employees in Northern California on Wednesday, the electric car maker's chief executive said.

A Cessna 310 struck an electrical tower after taking off on Wednesday morning, crashed into a residential neighborhood and killed all three people on board, according to local police. Tesla confirmed all had worked at the car company.

Tesla is withholding the employees' names while it works with authorities to notify their families, Chief Executive Elon Musk said.

"Tesla is a small, tightly-knit company, and this is a tragic day for us," Musk said.

Multicar crash at Daytona

I'm sure all of you auto racing fans are looking forward to this weekend, as on Sunday, Nascar presents one of the most famous events in modern racing history: the Daytona 500. The action at Daytona International Speedway is already underway with the Budweiser Shootout practice that took place last week, and if you think it was an uneventful precursor to the big race at Daytona this Sunday, then you were wrong. Why? Because Nascar got a start to its 2010 season not with a bang, but with a crunch as multiple cars became entangled in a nasty bang-up … Read more

An early burial for Hummer

I was reading an Associated Press article recently about all the soon-to-be-defunct product lines produced by General Motors: Pontiac, Saab, and Saturn. But another brand that's been on the way out for a while now was making headlines again, as GM looks all set in its selling off the Hummer brand to China-based Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Corporation. While it's not official yet, unless something goes awry it looks to be a done deal and GM will have washed their hands of the tanking SUV line.

With General Motors metaphorically taking its Hummer brand out to the … Read more

NASA drops a chopper from the sky

A certain American Airlines 757 pilot gave me and a couple of hundred others a very hard landing this week.

So my jaw finally began to cease chattering when I discovered NASA is beginning to work on dropping flying things from the sky to see if perhaps the impact can be absorbed.

NASA's Web site told me that it dropped a helicopter from 35 feet in order to see whether an expandable honeycomb cushion that NASA calls a "deployable energy absorber" could minimize damage to life, limb, and even nervous systems.

The MD-500's landing gear did … Read more
