Nikon pulls out all the stops for its latest enthusiast compact
Nikon's really going all out with the newest addition to its P series of compact cameras for amateur shooters. The Coolpix P6000, which replaces last year's P5100, is stuffed full of interesting features, like built-in GPS, an Ethernet connection, wireless flash, and a new Vista-compatible raw format. I'm a big proponent of in-camera GPS. Add-on solutions, at least from what I've seen on consumer models, can't give you an on-camera interface, which makes them too hard to configure. This is the first camera with built-in GPS that people actually might want to buy.

Nikon Coolpix S560 promises good feature-to-cost ratio for everyday shooting
For $249.95 the Nikon Coolpix S560 offers 10 effective megapixels, a 5x Zoom-Nikkor lens, the company's Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization technology, and a bunch of features to make taking pictures easier and end results better. (Yeah, sorry, it's kinda humdrum all the way around. On the other hand, that means it should be simple to use.)
The S560 has 15 scene modes to choose from, as well as the ability to let the camera automatically select the appropriate mode. These modes include a Smile Mode, which snaps a picture when the subject smiles; a Food … Read more
Nikon adds VR in compact P60
Taking on the popular Canon A720 IS with its update to the P50, Nikon's Coolpix P60 includes some nontrivial enhancements, including optical image stabilization (Vibration Reduction, or VR), an electronic viewfinder (which is unusual in a non-megazoom), and an increase in the zoom range to 5x up from 3.5x.
However, the longer zoom reach comes at the expense of the wide angle: the P50 offered an f/2.8-5.6 28mm-102mm-equivalent range, in contrast to the P60's narrower (though a bit faster at the telephoto end) f/3.6-4.5 36mm-180mm-equivalent range.
Though it uses the same … Read more
Nikon's new budget-priced Coolpix camera
While it doesn't feature an ultracompact metal body like the new Coolpix S-series cameras, or the viewfinder and manual controls of the new Coolpix P60, Nikon's new budget-priced Coolpix L18 stands out as the most affordable of Nikon's new cameras.
The colorful, 8-megapixel L18 sports a large 3-inch LCD screen, a surprising feature in a sub-$150 camera. Besides the large screen, however, the L18 offers a standard and unremarkable feature set, including a 3x optical zoom, 32 MB of built-in memory, and a maximum sensitivity of ISO 1,600. It draws power from two AA batteries, … Read more
A cavalcade of compact cameras from Nikon
Nikon has unveiled a pack of pocketable point-and-shoot cameras for style-minded users. These new Nikon Coolpix cameras all feature ultracompact, all-metal bodies, and range from a sub-$200 budget shooter to a feature-laden $300 model.
The Coolpix S210 presents the least expensive of the Coolpix S-cameras. It fits an 8-megapixel sensor and a 3x optical zoom lens into a 3/4-inch-thick aluminum body, making it very pocket-friendly. Its 2.5-inch screen is smaller than the L18's, but it makes up for its size with a high resolution and a 170-degree viewing angle. The Coolpix S210 also ships in March … Read more

Nikon introduces two new affordable amateur cameras
A few months ago, Nikon released the 10-megapixel Coolpix P5000, a photographer-friendly compact camera with plenty of options for advanced users. Barely half a year after its release, Nikon has unveiled its big brother, the Coolpix P5100. At its heart, the P5100 is simply a 12-megapixel version of the P5000. It keeps the P5000's same basic design, same 35 to 123mm-equivalent f/2.7-5.3 image-stabilized lens, and its same combination of optical viewfinder and 2.5-inch TFT LCD screen. However, the P5100 does feature Nikon's new Expeed image processor, which the P5000 was lacking. This new image … Read more
Nikon's latest Wi-Fi slimcam
Nikon has been dabbling in Wi-Fi-equipped cameras for a few years now. Most recently, the company included Wi-Fi in its ultracompact 7-megapixel Coolpix S50c. The new Coolpix S51c continues this trend and includes an 8MP CCD sensor, a 3-inch, 230,000-pixel LCD, sensitivity of up to ISO 1,600, and optical image stabilization. This new model also includes Nikon's D-Lighting to compensate for imperfect exposures after the fact, as well as Face Priority AF to help make sure that the camera focuses on your friends' faces, instead of a tree or some national monument in the background. It also … Read more
