Sony says AW yeah, delivers 18.4-inch laptop

Updating an earlier post, Sony is indeed bringing an 18-inch laptop to the U.S. in the form of the Vaio AW. Announced Wednesday morning, the Vaio AW features an 18.4-inch display with Adobe RGB color management. That is, your digital photos will look the same onscreen as they will on paper.

The display does 1080p for full HD playback, and its 16:9 aspect ratio matches that of movies. The 18-inch Acer Aspire 8920 also features a 16:9 screen ratio; most wide-screen laptops have a 16:10 ratio. Sony says the Vaio AW weighs "a little … Read more

FCC to test proposed free wireless service for interference

Federal Communications Commission engineers will be conducting tests in Seattle next week to see if a proposed free wireless service would interfere with T-Mobile's newly acquired spectrum.

The FCC has been considering auctioning 25 megahertz of spectrum in the 2155MHz to 2180MHz band of spectrum. As part of the rules for using the spectrum, the FCC plans to require license holders to offer some free wireless broadband service.

The FCC sees the plan, which is based on a proposal submitted to the FCC by M2Z Networks in 2006, as a way to provide broadband Internet service to millions of … Read more

Amazon launches hard disk in the sky

Amazon on Thursday announced that it is releasing its persistent storage option, called Elastic Block Service (EBS), to its suite of Amazon Web Services cloud computing options. The company announced this direction in April.

Previously, data associated with jobs running on Amazon's cloud computing platform, EC2, were attached to the jobs themselves; developers did not have access to their files and information except through EC2. With EBS, developers can create cloud-based file systems that they can access from whatever applications they wish. Amazon's other cloud storage systems, S3 and SimpleDB, don't offer this low-level access.

What is cloud computing?

In this week's Real Deal podcast, Tom Merritt and I try to explain cloud computing in concrete terms. Starting with an utterly opaque description from Forrester Research, we get into the realities of using the "cloud" of Internet-connected resources for data storage and computing. Then we dive into personal clouds of data--like what Microsoft is trying to build with Live Mesh.

Reminder: We record the Real Deal each Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time, and we have a live video feed and chatroom running while we're doing so. You can tune in at www.watchbol.com. … Read more

UTStarcom sneaks in the CDM7126

UTStarcom didn't have much of a presence at this year's CTIA, but it did sneak in an announcement of the AWS-enabled CDM-7126 handset for both Cricket and MetroPCS. The Cricket version is dubbed the CDM-7126C and the MetroPCS version is dubbed the CDM-7126M. They're both about the same, save for the look of the front surface. As for the phone itself, it's a pretty standard device, made for the entry-level market though it does have Bluetooth as well. The front surface is pretty unique in that there are LED indicators for incoming calls and text messages, … Read more

Amazon CTO on AWS outage: Like you can do better?

On February 15 this year, Amazon S3, the "cloud" storage service that's part of the Amazon Web Services suite of infrastructure applications, failed. Web 2.0 entrepreneurs who had been attracted to AWS based on its promised reliability and low cost had their confidence shaken. Several lost revenue when the service seized up.

Last week at the Under the Radar conference, Amazon CTO Werner Vogels sat down to an interview with Robert Scoble. The discussion of course came around to the S3 outage, and Vogels explained what happened. It was, he says, a "provisioning" and &… Read more

Mobileye makes advanced safety features available off the shelf

Readers of CNET Car Tech will be familiar with advanced safety systems such as collision-avoidance sensors, lane-departure warning devices, and adaptive cruise control. Trouble is, if you don't own a recently produced luxury car, you are unlikely to see the benefit of this technology. Mobileye is about to change that by making its AWS-4000 available in the aftermarket. Mobileye has some experience in this department as it is the active-safety supplier of choice for Volvo, BMW, and GM. The AWS-4000 (the acronym stands for Advance Warning System) is made up of three components: a monocular camera, which is mounted … Read more

The Internet does birthdays, too

Birthdays are one of the wonderful aspects of life that set us apart from robots, but that doesn't mean the cloud that is the Internet isn't fond of well wishing people with birthday salutations. Working at Webware, I register with an average of two services a day, often times more. Depending on the type of site, they'll occasionally ask for my birthday (mostly for age verification), which gets tucked away deep inside some server farm in rural Russia, or Ohio. Over the course of the past 10 months I've been here, plus whatever sites I've … Read more
