Samsung's new Galaxy S III ads: Apple fanboy now owns Samsung

Sometimes, you can tell when a company rather likes the product it's advertising.

It manages to restrain some of the baser impulses of its marketing department and displays the product with a certain understatement.

I have a feeling Samsung rather likes its Galaxy S III phone.

There have now been three ads to accompany the launch. While you couldn't say they necessarily hang together as a whole, you can definitely say that Samsung is over trying to tell you that you're a sad little Apple fanboy sheep, working part time as a barista.

Well, almost.

Samsung appoints Kwon Oh-hyun new CEO

Samsung has replaced CEO Choi Gee-sung with the head of its components operation.

Samsung's components business chief, Kwon Oh-hyun, will now head up the company as chief executive officer. Kwon will continue to run Samsung's component business, but will now be tasked with handling "corporate-wide affairs," Samsung said today. However, the presidents of Samsung's TV and appliances and telecom and IT divisions will not report to Kwon.

Although Choi is no longer chief executive, he hasn't been let go. Quite the contrary, he will now head up the Samsung Group Corporate Strategy Office, a … Read more

Apple request for ban on Samsung tablet put on hold

Apple is desperately trying to get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 banned from the United States. But before that can happen, Apple must wait for some judicial procedures to be completed.

Last month, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said that U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh was "incorrect in thinking that one Apple patent related to the iPad may be invalid" and said that the Cupertino, Calif.-based company was well within its rights to ask for a ban on the sale of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1. Samsung drops a patent from ITC complaint as Apple battle looms

Samsung has decided to withdraw a patent claim from its legal tussle with Apple before the U.S. International Trade Commission, according to a report.

The company on Friday filed a motion with the U.S. ITC requesting the removal of U.S. Patent No. 6,897,843, describing a "device and method for storing and reproducing digital audio data in a mobile terminal," from its case with Apple, FOSS Patents' Florian Mueller is reporting. According to Mueller, the withdrawal now leaves four patents at play in the hearing with Apple.

Judge to apply 'Cheech & Chong test' in Apple-Samsung case

The U.S. trade judge presiding over the Apple-Samsung patent-infringement lawsuit plans to consult the legal genius of Cheech and Chong to help him determine whether Samsung copied the iPhone's design.

During the opening of the trial today, U.S. International Trade Commission Judge Thomas Pender said he would apply the "Cheech & Chong test" to the case, referring to the comedy duo's routine about dog feces, according to a Bloomberg account. "Does it look like it, feel like it, smell like it?" he said.

Apple contends that Samsung copied the iPhone when it … Read more

Samsung revs up iTunes rival with new Galaxy S III

Samsung has found yet another way to compete with Apple.

The Galaxy S smartphone maker is officially kicking off its new iTunes rival Music Hub service starting today. Available as an app with the new Galaxy S III phone launching in 28 different countries, Music Hub borrows more than a page or two from iTunes but also adds a paid subscription model.

The service will offer Samsung phone and tablet owners access to 19 million songs, with prices comparable to those found on iTunes, according to Reuters. Users can stream music and download it from the Hub to play it … Read more

Apple claims Samsung destroyed evidence in patent case -- report

Earlier this month, Apple accused its rival Samsung of destroying evidence in their patent-infringement case, according to a new report.

According to Network World, which claims to have obtained a "heavily redacted" motion Apple filed with Northern District Court of California on May 1, the iPhone maker is charging Samsung with the "spoilation of evidence." Apple claims Samsung destroyed "vast quantities of relevant evidence in blatant disregard of its duty to preserve all such evidence," according to the report.

The companies' patent-infringement battle in the California district court is one of the more heated … Read more

Apple, Samsung trim patent claims, but still can't get along

Apple and Samsung have decided to reduce the number of patent infringement claims against each other in California.

Late yesterday, Apple said in a filing with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California that it has offered to drop about half of all of its patent-infringement claims in its case in that court with Samsung, FOSS Patents' Florian Mueller is reporting. The patents Apple is willing to drop cover technologies ranging from a status bar and touchscreen shielding to the iPhone's body style.

Samsung, meanwhile, has agreed to drop five out of the 12 patents … Read more

Apple v. Samsung: 50 suits, 10 countries -- and counting

With patent litigation fast turning into the tech industry's favorite pastime, the yearlong legal battle between Apple and Samsung that began last April now extends to more than 10 countries around the world and at least 50 initial filings. Incredible.

Patent expert Florian Mueller, who, thankfully, tracks this stuff closely so the rest of us don't have to risk having our brains explode, has done his usual first-rate job compiling a list sorting out the venues of this "massively escalated, planet-spanning dispute." Amazingly, he noted, the number of legal filings might even climb higher. As Mueller … Read more

New iPad online wait time drops to just one week

Consumers in the U.S. looking to order the new iPad via Apple's online store now face a shorter wait time of just five to seven business days. That includes all variations of the tablet, from the 16 GB Wi-Fi only version to the 64 GB Wi-Fi + 4G model.

The new estimate is also a notable improvement from the two to three weeks that U.S. buyers had to wait when the new tablet debuted in mid-March. The earlier iPad 2 faced hefty wait times over a much longer period last year. So it seems Apple was better prepared this year to ramp up supply to keep up with demand.… Read more
