This is a change from the last few weeks, when the company vaguely said on its online retail store that the phones would ship in "October." Some customers have also gotten shipping quotes that say they'll get their phones in mid-November.
The mixture of new software and hardware improvements is enough to make apps running on the iPhone 5S more crash-prone than those on other iPhone models.
Apps running on the iPhone 5S crash twice as often as those available on the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5C, data from mobile app analytics company Crittercism shows. The information, which was presented to All Things Digital and published on Friday, comes from analyzing "hundreds of millions of apps," according to the tech site.
The reason for the increased crash instances might actually be a hardware problem. Although app developers were able … Read more

US consumers hunting for the iPhone 5S may find it in even shorter supply these days.
Stock of the new phone has plummeted in the US from 27 percent of all iPhone models available to just 6 percent in the past week, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Based on checks of 60 Apple stores in the US, Munster also found that the percentage of stores with at least one model of the 5S fell to 40 percent over the past week from 90 percent two weeks ago.
But the 5S may intentionally be playing hard to get, suggests the … Read more
The infamous "blue screen of death" seems to have expanded from Windows PCs to iPhones.
Several iPhone 5S owners report that their phones are turning a mean shade of blue and then restarting. Users chiming in on the Apple Support Communities and MacRumors forums said the problem occurs when they use the Numbers app in Apple's iWork suite, which comes free with the new iPhones. But a couple of people report that it also happens when using the ESPN ScoreCenter app.… Read more
Well, now it's got a new side service that will send you an e-mail when the model you're looking for is back in stock at a local store.
The free service remains U.S. only for now. And in case you're worried about just where your e-mail address is going, creator Mordy Tikotzky tells me he "won't be submitting them" to the National Security Administration. You can, of course, provide some other … Read more
Always On is, undoubtedly, the most fun I've ever had in tech. And that's what I love the most about this show: it's been a celebration of all the ways that technology is truly a part of our everyday lives -- the good, the bad, the ugly, and occasionally the midair. I know we were best known for a sort of gleeful destructiveness, but the idea for the torture tests came directly from real-life stories and personal experience. And from your responses, dear audience, you've clearly had all the same kinds of experiences. (Well, maybe not … Read more
One of the advantages that iMessage has over text messaging is that an indicator is displayed when the other person in the conversation is typing a message. This simple animation gives you a heads-up of an incoming message; I often find myself staring at the dancing dots until the message eventually comes through.
That same feature can also be the center of a prank. Yesterday I spotted a tweet from @Panzer linking to a GIF-based iMessage prank. I wasn't sure what to expect when I clicked on the link, but I was not disappointed.
What you'll need to … Read more
