HTC has planned a press event for March 25 at which we expect to see the company introduce its flagship smartphone for 2014 (the formal invitations just went out today). Though HTC has yet to spill any details about what we'll see that day -- all signs point to an "HTC One 2" -- I have a few suggestions as to what needs to happen before the company can hit a home run. Sure, some of these are little more ambitious than others, but that's all right. There's at least a month's worth of … Read more
BARCELONA, Spain -- Will Nokia finally go Android?
On the first official day of Mobile World Congress, Nokia is widely expected to unveil an Android-powered smartphone -- a departure from its previous decision to solely stick with Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. The company will likely unveil a few Windows Phone devices as well, but an Android phone would certainly capture all of the headlines.

Jolla, the Finnish phone company founded by Nokia refugees, is ready to roll out the full, "commercially ready" 1.0 version of its Sailfish software. The attractive OS can run Android apps and you'll soon be able to try it out on your Android phone by downloading a launcher that mimics the Sailfish interface.
Sailfish started life as MeeGo, once the future of Nokia software, but sidelined in favour of Windows Phone when Nokia aligned with Microsoft. It's similar enough to Android that you can install Android app stores, and the company hopes it'll be … Read more
Web guru and Android enthusiast Tim Bray has announced he's leaving Google. Why? Because he wants to work from home.
"It's an amicable separation in the face of irreconcilable differences: I wouldn't move to California and Google wouldn't open a Vancouver office," Bray wrote in a blog post. "Both before and after being hired, I had been asked to consider moving south. I didn't want to and politely declined. Eventually, the group I'm in politely informed me that staying remote wasn't an option."
Not one to mince words, Bray … Read more

Fledgling UK-based mobile maker Kazam -- formed last year by two former HTC execs -- has conjured up more reasonably priced Android phones.
Its new Thunder 2 brings 4G LTE, while the Trooper 2 tweaks the company's midrange options.
Fully embracing Samsung's "a phone for every price and screen size" philosophy, Kazam has three designs -- Thunder, Trooper and the super-budget Life -- but they all come in several different sizes. The Thunder 2 comes in 4.5- and 5-inch models.
The Thunder 2 4.5L is a respectable midrange effort, with 4G LTE, 1GB of … Read more
European operator Orange's Libon messaging and calling app will add a new feature that lets you send text, picture, and audio messages to your contacts for free -- even if they're not Libon users themselves.
The Open Chat feature goes live on iOS later Thursday, with an Android update planned "in the coming weeks." When a Libon user sends a message to a non-Libon user, they'll be sent a link that takes them to an HTML5 chat window where they can continue the conversation. The HTML5 interface will also work on desktop browsers, as well … Read more
