Snow Leopard hit hardest by Flashback malware

Russian security company Dr. Web recently analyzed one of the latest known variants of the Flashback malware for OS X, and in doing so revealed some interesting statistics regarding the infection rates of the malware -- which, by some perspectives, counters criticism of Apple's lapse in attention to security on OS X.

Since its initial findings of Flashback, Dr. Web has been continually gathering data from infected systems by using sinkhole techniques where its analysts took over the domains used by the malware and were able to intercept communications by the malware on infected systems. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison: I don't know if Java is free

Among the highlights emanating from U.S. District Court in San Francisco courtroom 8 today was Oracle CEO Larry Ellison's response to a question regarding the status of the Java programming language, which his company acquired when it bought Sun Microsystems in 2010.

Asked by Google's lead attorney, Robert Van Nest, if the Java language is free, Ellison was slow to respond. Judge William Alsup pushed Ellison to answer with a yes or no. As ZDNet reporter Rachel King observed in the courtroom, Ellison resisted and huffed, "I don't know."

In other words, it's … Read more

SAN FRANCISCO -- Oracle CEO Larry Ellison defended his company's patent and copyright infringement suit against Google on the second day of the trial here this morning.

Sprint CFO hints at LTE iPhones in the future

Sprint's financial chief today tiptoed around the prospect of a 4G LTE iPhone, the latest indication that the next version will come packed with a superfast wireless connection.

Speaking to investors at a conference earlier today, Sprint's chief financial officer, Joe Euteneuer, did not say such a device was coming, but he did say the company has an agreement with Apple similar to that of AT&T and Verizon Wireless, hinting that technology designed for those networks would come to Sprint's as well.

"If you make the assumption that they launch a device at a … Read more

Google has released the registration details for its annual Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco on June 27 to 29.

Apple raises 3G/4G download limit to 50MB

iOS users who need to download a beefy app over 3G or 4G now have a better shot.

Apple yesterday bumped up the download limit for content over a cell connection to a healthy 50 megabytes. Previously, iOS users were restricted to downloading items no larger than 20MB unless they did so over Wi-Fi.

The 20 MB limit was a potential pitfall for app developers who worried that apps created for the new iPad's Retina Display wouldn't be accessible via 3G/4G. The new 50MB limit applies to any type of content from the App Store or iTunes, … Read more

Google may be planning Siri rival for later this year

Google could be cooking up a new voice assistant designed to out-Siri Siri.

The company is said to have a new system in the works dubbed "Assistant" designed to help people complete tasks by voice. And if Google's plans come together, Assistant could debut in the fourth quarter, according to TechCrunch.

Citing information from a source, TechCrunch said on Friday that the search giant would control all of the layers involved in Assistant. But Google would let third-party developers tap into the system to create their own unique apps, a marked contrast from Apple's Siri, which … Read more
