Playing dress-up with the iPhone

As noted back in early May, we were shocked that it had taken so long for iPhone cases to begin showing up, some five months after it had been announced. But no sooner was that item printed that the floodgates began to open.

To date, however, most of the gadget-wear has been mundane to mediocre--hardly befitting the most celebrated consumer product launch in memory, if not history. So even if the latest case from urban apparel company LRG isn't exactly your taste, we think it's worthy of mention at least for an attempt at originality beyond the usual … Read more

No manual music management on iPhone?

During CNET's review of the Apple iPhone I found a surprising omission from the iPhone's device tab in iTunes. It seems that there's no way to manually move content between iTunes and the iPhone. Instead, content management relies entirely on automatic syncing preferences. As someone who uses their iPod on multiple computers, I rely on the 'Manage music and videos manually' check box that appears in the device manager tab when I connect my iPod to iTunes. Without it, each time I sync my iPod to a different computer I run the risk of having content overwritten. … Read more

What can you do with Bluetooth on the iPhone?; Bluetooth File Exchange, iSync do not work

The iPhone has Bluetooth 2.0 EDR built-in, but so far it seems to carry little functionality outside use of accessories like the Apple Bluetooth headset.

Apple's Bluetooth File Exchange for Mac OS X cannot send files to the iPhone stating "Device does not have the necessary services."

iSync for Mac OS X cannot be used to synchronize with the iPhone via Bluetooth, delivering the message "iSync can not connect to this device."

We've yet to hear reports of Windows applications that can successfully interact with the iPhone via Bluetooth.

So, what can be … Read more

How to reset the iPhone

A troubleshooting procedure that according to Apple will rarely need to be used, but can solve instances where the iPhone won't turn on, or the display freezes or doesn't respond: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. This will completely reset the iPhone.

Calls going to old phone: fully transferring phone numbers from another provider may take 24 hours

Several readers have reported an issue where, after activating new iPhones and requesting number transfer from another wireless provider (T-Mobile, Sprint, etc.), calls are still being directed to their old phone. Note that the number transfer process can take 24 hours (or more), and must be complete before the new AT&T iPhone number will properly receive phone calls.

Some iPhones ship without SIM card (or with improperly seated SIM card), will not activate

We purchased an iPhone 8GB today (after waiting in line at the local AT&T store for about 8 hours), only to find that once home and opened, the device lacked a SIM card. iTunes and the phone both displayed a message indicating that no valid, unlocked SIM card was inserted, and that the card is required for activation. Our iPhone lacked both a SIM card and a SIM card tray.

Fortunately, though the iPhone was sold out at the original place of purchase, our local Apple Store still had several dozen units on hand, and we were able … Read more
