Toshiba launches AMD-powered notebooks

Toshiba launched Tuesday a new line of notebooks powered by chips from Advanced Micro Devices, marking the first time in seven years the computer maker has ended its exclusive arrangement with rival chip maker Intel.

The Toshiba Satellite A215 series will feature several versions of AMD's dual-core processors, such as AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology Gold Edition TL64 and the Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL56 version.

Toshiba cited consumer and retailer demand as the reason for striking the deal with AMD. Two years ago, Toshiba and a number of other Japanese computer makers found themselves … Read more

Hot laptops you can't get yet

Not one, but two of the upcoming laptops we're most excited about made unexpected appearances on the Interwebs this morning.

The Dell XPS m1330--rumored, leaked, and then finally half-confirmed by Dell (in their infamous "23 Confessions")--showed up again today on Engadget, with several new photos and a rumored ship date (from a "trusted insider") of July 10.

This extra-thin 13-inch looks like a real step in the right direction for Dell in terms of laptop design; leaked images have been circulating online for a while.

Perhaps even more exciting was an Akihabara News storyRead more

Why you should pay attention to product recalls

Here's a good rule of thumb: when a product is recalled for, say, bursting into flames, take the time to get the replacement.

A Toshiba laptop containing a recalled Sony battery caught fire and burned a desk in Great Britain last month, Toshiba said today. The laptop maker asked Sony to investigate the incident, and a short circuit in the battery pack was deemed the culprit. Toshiba says it will reach out to customers to ensure they are aware of the potential danger of continuing use of recalled batteries. A list of 28 models of affected laptop will be … Read more

Toshiba gets jolt of HD DVD reality

You've heard the expression "underpromise, overdeliver." Well, Toshiba execs are getting a little taste of "overpromise, underdeliver" when it comes to sales of HD DVD players.

According to a Reuters report today, "The Japanese electronics group now expects to sell 1 million next-generation optical disc players and recorders in North America by the end of calendar 2007, down 44 percent from its previous estimate of 1.8 million unit sales." Toshiba's also pulling back on its projection of selling 3 million units of HD DVD players and recorders worldwide by the end … Read more

Acer aces out Lenovo as world's third-largest PC maker

Of the 62 million PCs shipped in the first quarter of 2007, the biggest story is a company that shipped a little over 4 million units. Taiwan-based Acer has taken hold of 6.8 percent of the global PC market, good enough for third place, according to market research firm iSuppli.

After taking the No. 3 slot in worldwide notebook sales from Toshiba in the fourth quarter of 2006, Acer has taken even more ground, this time from Lenovo. The Chinese computer maker is now 0.4 percent points behind Acer in worldwide computer market share.

Acer also turned in … Read more

Toshiba's new ultraslim ultraportable

One of the few laptops that has really grabbed our attention with eye-catching industrial design this year is the Toshiba Portege R400, a slim convertible tablet we saw back in January. The just-announced follow-up, Toshiba's Portege R500, is even more impressive.

We got a chance to play around with one of these a few weeks ago, and it was literally one of the thinnest, lightest 12-inch ultraportable laptops we've ever seen. It's got all the requisite ultraportable features, from an indoor/outdoor backlit LED display to a superthin 7mm DVD drive--similar in some ways to the 13-inch Dell XPS m1330Read more

Toshiba, AMD caught off guard by morning news

Turns out this morning's news that Toshiba will be using AMD processors in up to 20 percent of its laptops in the United States and Europe--thus ending its exclusive association with Intel--wasn't exactly a planned announcement. When we caught up with our PR contact for Toshiba, he was scrambling to put together an official release and would only confirm the content of the news stories that had appeared thus far. He did mention, though, that the first Toshiba notebooks to see AMD processors would be in the company's Satellite line, and that we can expect to receive … Read more
