A sneak peek at the new Android Market

We're receiving more tips as we approach the Motorola Android event on September 10. An Android Atlas reader with access to the Motorola Sholes sent in pictures that show off the new look for Android Market. The tip is unconfirmed, but based on the information that was provided, I'd say the screenshots are real. Please keep in mind that these reflect a work in progress and the final look could change.

The pictures below reveal an updated user interface. The new Market has buttons for Top Paid, Top Free, and Just In. There's also a search button … Read more

Report: Half of Android users have not purchased apps

According to a recent survey from AdMob, more than half of Google Android users (55 percent) have never downloaded a paid application. The amount is double the 23 percent of iPhone users who have chose not to purchase apps.

So what is preventing Android users from spending their cash? Though many people from other countries still lack access to paid applications, some developers are blaming the structure of the Android Market. Currently, customers can only purchase applications using Google Checkout, which requires a Google account and a credit card.

The iTunes App Store also requires a credit card for purchases, … Read more

Apartment Guide releases Android app

As a young bachelor, I'm no stranger to apartment hunting. Normally, I do my research online, make a list of apartments, and head out in my car to visit the listings. This often turns into a full day event, particularly when I have trouble locating some of the places.

I've often wished for a designated application for my Google Android handset to aid in this process so I was overjoyed when I discovered one last week. Apartments for Android is a new application from Apartment Guide that simplifies the hunting process.

Android apps show big potential for growth

This was originally posted at ZDNet's Between the Lines.

Android, iPhone and iPod Touch users are all highly engaged with applications and frequently download them to their devices, according to a new survey from AdMob.

However, Android has a much smaller base of devices and thus has more upside ahead.

AdMob, a company that tracks mobile Web and application usage, found that Android and iPhone users download nine to 10 apps a month and iPod Touch users download 18 a month. More than half of the Android and iPhone users spend more than 30 minutes a day using apps, … Read more

Using an unlock pattern on the MyTouch 3G

As with any good touch-screen phone, the display on the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G will lock after a few minutes of inactivity. It's definitely a needed feature, unless you enjoy it when your phone places random calls while jostling around in your pocket.

As a security precaution, many handsets like the iPhone allow you to use a numeric code to unlock the screen for use. The MyTouch, however, takes a different tack. It lets you unlock your handset by tracing a pattern between a grid of nine dots on the display.

The pattern is customizable and you can change it … Read more

FCC outs Archos Android media tablets

Just when you thought Zunes and iPods would have September all to themselves, the portable video player powerhouse known as Archos drops off two new devices for FCC approval.

The Archos A5S and A5H revealed in the FCC documents look very similar to last year's Archos 5 Internet media tablet, although the photos show a new white color for the A5S (shown above), and close-up shots of the A5H reveal what looks like a microSD slot and microUSB port. There's no mistaking the Archos 5's same gorgeous, 4.8-inch TFT display, though, which still gives us shivers (… Read more

Little can save Google and Nokia from mobile failure

If you look at the history of computing, very few companies manage to resurrect falling fortunes to lead their respective markets. Does this mean that once down, a company should resign itself to being out?

Apple is a famous example of a come-from-behind victory, but also a poor one: while it wins plaudits for its sexy MacBook Pro laptops, it still commands less than 10 percent of the personal computer market. Good, but not great.

In browsers, Firefox was left for dead years ago, only to get a new life and 22 percent market share. But Mozilla executive Mitchell Baker is quick to callRead more

What we might see at Moto's Android event

Motorola is finally ready to unveil its first Google Android handsets. Invitations sent out Tuesday announced a media event in San Francisco on September 10. Details were limited, but we expect to see an appearance from two rumored Motorola phones, the Morrison and Sholes.

The Morrison should launch on T-Mobile later this year. Initial rumors said it would be a budget Android phone, but the leaked specs are impressive. The Morrison will feature the same CPU as the first two Android phones (G1 and MyTouch), but will offer several enhancements that should make it a desirable phone.
