Hitachi makes new eco-friendly hard drive

Hitachi on Wednesday joined the crowd of green-storage vendors with its fourth generation of the CinemaStar hard-drive family.

The new drive features Hitachi's EcoTrac Classification. This means it's halogen-free and has very low power consumption. The new CinemaStar features a read/write power specification of 1.4W--a reduction of 22 percent compared to previous models.

Other that that, this is a 2.5-inch (laptop) SATA hard drive that has the spinning speed of 5,400 rpm, which is popular though slower than the 7,200 rpm of some higher-end drives.

Mimo UM-740 monitor: 7 inches could be a huge deal

During CES earlier this year, I raved about D-Link's SideState and whined that it wouldn't be available soon. Well, it's still not going to be available any sooner than the second part of the year, but now I don't need to wait for it anymore.

I just received Nanovision's newly announced Mimo UM-740 7-inch USB-powered monitor. The unit is very similar to the SideStage, plus it has touch-screen support and a Webcam with a built-in microphone.

The Mimo UM-740 uses a single USB 2.0 connection for both power and connectivity. Once plugged in, the 7-inch monitor provides an instant 800x480-pixel secondary display. Though it's small and holds no appeal to gamers, this unit is great for instant messaging, e-mail clients, streaming media, and especially Photoshop toolboxes. At the 2009 Integrated Systems Europe in Amsterdam, SIM2 Multimedia and Dolby Laboratories unveiled what they refer to as "the latest in high-dynamic-range (HDR)-enabled LCD flat-screen display technology featuring Dolby Vision." NEC unveils massive display with slimmer bezel

Transcend makes portable solid-state drive

Another day, another 16:9 monitor from Acer

Hot on the heels of the announcement of its B Series of displays, Acer on Monday introduced another 23-incher, the H233H bmid.

As is becoming common with PC monitors this year, the Acer H233H has a 16:9 aspect ratio, as opposed to the 16:10 that most wide-screen monitors include.

According to Acer, the monitor's onscreen display (OSD) array excludes buttons in favor of a no-button, touch-sensitive array.
