Hitachi makes new eco-friendly hard drive

Hitachi on Wednesday joined the crowd of green-storage vendors with its fourth generation of the CinemaStar hard-drive family.

The new drive features Hitachi's EcoTrac Classification. This means it's halogen-free and has very low power consumption. The new CinemaStar features a read/write power specification of 1.4W--a reduction of 22 percent compared to previous models.

Other that that, this is a 2.5-inch (laptop) SATA hard drive that has the spinning speed of 5,400 rpm, which is popular though slower than the 7,200 rpm of some higher-end drives.

According to Hitachi, its new CinemaStar hard drive … Read more

Mimo UM-740 monitor: 7 inches could be a huge deal

During CES earlier this year, I raved about D-Link's SideState and whined that it wouldn't be available soon. Well, it's still not going to be available any sooner than the second part of the year, but now I don't need to wait for it anymore.

I just received Nanovision's newly announced Mimo UM-740 7-inch USB-powered monitor. The unit is very similar to the SideStage, plus it has touch-screen support and a Webcam with a built-in microphone.

The Mimo UM-740 uses a single USB 2.0 connection for both power and connectivity. Once plugged in, the 7-inch monitor provides an instant 800x480-pixel secondary display. Though it's small and holds no appeal to gamers, this unit is great for instant messaging, e-mail clients, streaming media, and especially Photoshop toolboxes. You then can use the main screen for other tasks that require more space.… Read more

2,206 high-power LEDs at your service

Tired of hearing about unaffordable displays that are light years beyond what you have in front of you right now? Yeah, well so am I. Doesn't mean I'll stop reporting on them though, 'cause misery loves company.

At the 2009 Integrated Systems Europe in Amsterdam, SIM2 Multimedia and Dolby Laboratories unveiled what they refer to as "the latest in high-dynamic-range (HDR)-enabled LCD flat-screen display technology featuring Dolby Vision." Called the SIM2 Solar Series, the new displays will be available in the second quarter of this year.

SIM2's Solar Series is a 47-inch LCD display … Read more

NEC unveils massive display with slimmer bezel

If you're planning to display a large image across several monitors--you know, maybe you're into world domination--then a wide bezel is a problem. With a wide bezel, there can be as much as several inches between sections of the image.

This week, NEC announced the 46-inch MultiSync X461UN "ultra-narrow" professional display, the intended use of that is in video wall solutions. The kicker here--and the reason for my setup paragraph (see previous paragraph)--is that when two of these behemoths are placed next to each other, there is only a 7.3 millimeters distance between the … Read more

Transcend makes portable solid-state drive

If you like your thumb drive for the durability, you'll like what Transcend introduced on Monday. It's a new breed of compact external storage device that's based on 1.8-inch solid state drives (SSDs), the SSD18M.

Unlike traditional external storage devices that are based on hard-disk drives, the SSD18M is made of reliable NAND flash memory that contains no moving parts. This eliminates the possibility of mechanical failure due to shock or vibration and also provides substantial weight savings and reduced power consumption.

The new drive features both both eSATA and USB2.0 interface options. This means … Read more

10 inches is the new 9 inches (for Netbooks, at least)

When 9-inch Netbooks started to replace the original 7-inch models, we got firmly behind that trend. When 10-inch Netbooks started to appear, we declared that we liked them better than the 9-inch versions, but many PC makers didn't immediately follow suit.

Now we're pleased to report that the 10-inch Netbook trend is in full swing, with two big holdouts, Dell and Acer, getting on board.

Dell semi-secretly showed off the 10-inch version of its Netbook at CES, minus pricing and details, but now a U.K. store called Tesco has it for sale at 349 pounds, which is … Read more

Another day, another 16:9 monitor from Acer

Hot on the heels of the announcement of its B Series of displays, Acer on Monday introduced another 23-incher, the H233H bmid.

As is becoming common with PC monitors this year, the Acer H233H has a 16:9 aspect ratio, as opposed to the 16:10 that most wide-screen monitors include.

According to Acer, the monitor's onscreen display (OSD) array excludes buttons in favor of a no-button, touch-sensitive array.

The display also includes a 1,920x1,080 (1080p) native resolution, 300 candelas per square meters (cd/m2) brightness, a 160-degree vertical and horizontal viewing angle, a 5ms pixel response … Read more
