T-Mobile could debut Galaxy S Blaze Q on August 15

T-Mobile's Android lineup includes another Galaxy series handset in the coming weeks, according to details uncovered by TmoNews. Called the Galaxy S Blaze Q, the smartphone should join the carrier's roster on August 15.

Unconfirmed details for the SGH-T699 handset suggest a midrange Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich experience with a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, a 720pHD display, 1GB RAM, and a pair of cameras. The sliding QWERTY keyboard, which isn't that common anymore, should appeal to social networking enthusiasts and first-time smartphone buyers. Given the rumored hardware, I suspect a low price point is … Read more

Subtle, useful Android 4.0 lands on Samsung Galaxy Note July 10

AT&T will start upgrading its Samsung Galaxy Note to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tomorrow, and CNET got an advance look.

After a week with the updated phone, I can say that existing owners will be pleased with the boost from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich. The OS won't look very different; in fact, a glance at the home screen is indistinguishable from the view on Gingerbread (a shame.) However, press down on the home button and your recent tabs appear, press the Galaxy Note against another NFC phone to engage Android Beam, and hop into … Read more

Wait, did a judge just say Samsung is 'not as cool' as Apple?

I have a feeling the world's courts are getting a little fed up with Apple/Samsung lawsuits.

Or even just tech lawsuits in general.

However, today's verdict in Apple's attempt to prove that the Samsung Galaxy Tab is an iPad with a longer brand name takes judicial irritation into uncharted and rather lovely waters.

In finding that Samsung had not at all, in any way, well, not quite copied Apple's signature tablet, Judge Colin Birss used very contemporary, non-technical language to make his point.

I am grateful to Computerworld for helping me identify that the judge … Read more

Samsung: Don't blame the Galaxy S3 for burning up

Samsung says that its Galaxy S3 has been exonerated following an earlier report of it burning up.

According to the company, it hired a third-party organization, Fire Investigations U.K., to inspect the damaged device. That investigation found that the trouble occurred in June after an "energy source" was used to heat the device and cause the damage.

"The only way it was possible to produce damage similar to the damage recorded within the owner's damaged device was to place the devices or component parts within a domestic microwave," the investigation found, according to Samsung.… Read more

Verizon pushes back Samsung Galaxy S3 sales to July 12

Those of you looking to buy a new Samsung Galaxy S3 online from Verizon Wireless will have to wait a couple of extra days.

The carrier's Web site now pegs the phone's online availability for July 12, a change from the previous date of July 10.

However, preorders still seem to be on track, according to Engadget, which reports that some of its readers have already received the phone or at least been notified that it's shipping.

The Galaxy S3 is already available through AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint.… Read more

Galaxy Tab doesn't copy Apple designs, U.K. court rules

Score one for Samsung Electronics.

After several legal defeats resulting in a product ban, Samsung finally got a court to side with it. The company said that the High Court of England and Wales ruled that its Galaxy Tab did not infringe upon Apple's tablet designs, and found 50 different recognizable traits.

The victory is a measure of relief after a few rough weeks in which a U.S. judge ordered a ban on the Galaxy Nexus, resulting in Google pulling it from the Google Play store before putting it back up Saturday. Samsung has filed an appeal and … Read more

New Samsung Galaxy S3 ads: Very Facebook, not very Apple

If I can't share with you -- right now -- that I'm about to weep/gnash/gurn/smile/eat, then what kind of modern human am I?

This is the essence that has been injected into us by Facebook and one that is fomented by Samsung's new Galaxy S3 ads.

In a series of three new opuses -- which Business Insider espied over its lunch -- Samsung is trying to make our hearts leap and our pockets flutter with the idea of being able to share images and files instantly.

It's a deeply modern and persuasive … Read more

Galaxy Nexus reappears in Google Play store

The harried Galaxy Nexus smartphone is again available for purchase in the Google Play store.

On June 29, a judge in a lower court granted Apple's request for a pretrial injunction against U.S. sales of the Samsung-made, Android-running smartphone while the court determines whether the device infringes the patents Apple claims it does. Samsung appealed, and the appeals court temporarily lifted the ban yesterday, while it deliberates on whether to dump the ban altogether.

Apple, however, may be able to convince the court to reinstate the injunction while the legal proceedings roll on; it has until Thursday to … Read more

Top 5 Android smartphones (summer 2012)

Subscribe: RSS (SD) RSS (HD) iTunes (SD) iTunes (HD) There's never been a better time to buy an Android smartphone. Device manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC, LG, and Motorola are at the top of their game, pushing the limits of screen quality, battery life, and design.

CNET always keeps an up-to-date list of the best Android smartphones, and it's a list that sees a lot of turnover. But as smartphone manufacturers gear up for their iPhone 5 retaliation this fall, I figured it would be a good time to take a snapshot of the best Android smartphones for … Read more

How to turn off notifications for an app in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Last month we got our first look at Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and all of its buttery goodness. With plenty of new features coming to the latest release of Android, there are some smaller tweaks that haven't seen a whole lot of discussion.

One of those tweaks is the capability to disable notifications for a particular app. This will come in handy if you have an app that's overloading you with notifications, with no setting in the app to disable them. But now you can do it at the OS level in Android 4.1.

You may … Read more
