Lenovo chosen as designer of '08 Olympic torch

Can a computer company design a torch? Yes, according to the committee behind the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, which has selected a design by China-headquartered PC manufacturer Lenovo as the model for the games' iconic torch. According to a press conference on Thursday morning hosted by Lenovo, which is also a worldwide sponsor of the Olympics, the design was chosen from over 300 contenders.

According to Lenovo, the torch design took ten months and was the product of more than 30 engineers and design specialists. The end result, called "The Cloud of Promise," incorporates elements of both … Read more

Lenovo jumps gun on Intel's Santa Rosa launch

Intel doesn't plan to introduce the next version of its Centrino notebook technology until May 9, but Lenovo is all ready to start shipping ThinkPads with the new chips.

DailyTech spotted specifications for new ThinkPad T61 and R61 laptops up on Lenovo's site Tuesday, but they are gone now (hopefully not along with the guy who posted them). The systems used Intel's next-generation Santa Rosa notebook technology, with four Core 2 Duo processors between them at various clock speeds up to 2.4GHz, a new graphics chipset, and Intel Turbo Memory, which is what the marketing department … Read more

Spotted: Lenovos with Centrino Pro

NotebookReview pointed us to spec lists for the refreshed ThinkPad T61 and ThinkPad R61, both of which will be built on the platform formerly known as Santa Rosa. The announcement is limited to new configurations for the Asia Pacific region, but we don't think it much of a stretch to assume we'll see similar Centrino Pro ThinkPads in the States.

One of the most intriguing features listed on the Lenovo page is the "Intel Turbo Memory 1GB hard drive for faster performance." We assume this is the official name for the Robson caching technology Intel demonstrated … Read more

Lenovo recalls 100,000 ThinkPad batteries

Here we go again. Last year, Lenovo recalled more than half a million batteries as a participant in the widespread Sony laptop battery recall that included Apple, Dell, Toshiba, and others. Lenovo today announced it is recalling 100,000 Sanyo batteries that it sells with its ThinkPad laptops.

The company has received four complaints about lithium ion batteries overheating and damaging ThinkPad laptops when the batteries were dropped or otherwise struck on the corner. The batteries in question are the extended, nine-cell battery, which Lenovo sells as an upgrade option on three ThinkPad lines: the R Series (R60 and R60e), … Read more

ColorWare makes ThinkPads blush

Somewhere, ghosts of IBM's past are spinning in their graves. ColorWare is bringing 28 hues--including pink, purple, yellow and bright orange--to laptops from Lenovo that were once produced under the nameplate of Big Blue, that most buttoned-down of corporate establishments.

Laptoping says ColorWare applies its "X2 scratch-resistant liquid plastic coating" to Lenovo's "ThinkPad T60" laptops, whose features include an Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 1GB of memory and a DVD burner. But it's the complex coloring process that draws the most attention: "The X2 coating is applied to the laptops and … Read more

Lenovo stretches its screens

Lenovo did the math. On Tuesday, the company expanded the number of ThinkPad models featuring a 15.4-inch widescreen to match rival products for the road-warrior crowd.

Lenovo stretched the T60 display, making it shorter in height than its 15-inch T60 XGA sibling. As a result, it can accommodate up to 30 percent more movie images, uh, data on the screen. Lenovo also boasts that the shorter screen gives greater clearance on the airplane when the passenger seated in front of you suddenly reclines.

The T60 widescreen also features a WXGA display, Intel Core 2 Duo processors and a range … Read more

Lenovo's new Tablet PC conquers screen glare

Expectations for the Tablet PC have fallen a bit in recent years, after the breathless predictions of the Tablet PC revolution from a few years ago. Only about 1 million tablets will be sold this year, out of more than 200 million overall PC sales.

Still, PC companies continue to offer doodlers and creative types a way to digitally capture their scribblings. Lenovo's got a new ThinkPad Tablet PC, the X60, that comes with a new display technology that is supposed to be easier to see under the glare from the sun.

The 12-inch screen also comes with what … Read more
