Mobile IM to surpass SMS?

A recent Gartner study estimates that 189 billion mobile messages have been sent by U.S. mobile-phone subscribers in 2007. It forecasts 301 billion mobile messages sent in 2008.

If correct, those figures would still account for only a small fraction of the 2.3 trillion messages to be sent across major markets worldwide in 2008 (a 19.6 percent increase from the 2007 total of 1.9 trillion messages). Asia is the biggest mobile-messaging market worldwide. China is in the lead, with approximately 560 billion SMS messages sent in 2007, followed by the Philippines' 430 billion and Japan's … Read more

Flash and Flex continue to blow away Silverlight

Microsoft has been trying hard to get the world to care about Silverlight. Visit Microsoft.com and you'll be forced to install it if you want to stay on the site. Microsoft has also been out on the evangelism trail, talking up its Rich Internet Application platform alternative to Adobe.

As Tim O'Reilly writes, however, it doesn't seem to be having any effect, a fact confirmed by other data, as well. Silverlight is still a dog on the Internet.… Read more

Study: Developer activity on Facebook's platform is slowing

All gold rushes must come to an end, and according to one new report, Facebook's developer platform is no exception.

Facebook developer Jesse Farmer, creator of developer analytics service Adonomics, did an extensive amount of number-crunching after coming to an odd observation earlier this year: "Something is wrong in the Facebook developer community," Farmer wrote in a blog post Tuesday. "Starting in March I began noticing that the level of activity in the Facebook developers forum was dropping sharply."

Farmer's research confirmed his speculation: activity in the Facebook developer forum, from posts per day … Read more

Overwhelming response slows down iPhone iFunding

Representatives of Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, the firm behind a $100 million venture capital for official iPhone application development, told iPhone Atlas that its managers have been been overwhelmed by the response and subsequent slew of applications submitted for iFunding.

Since the program's inception, KPCB has received more than 1500 applications. Due to the immense activity, KPCB says it's currently missing the approximate two week deadline mentioned on their website. The delay is wrought in part by a meticulous review of all applications, the firm says. Each submission is reviewed by one of the firm's partners … Read more
