Basic image editor

Too often we see photo utilities that fall into the trap of having only one feature; they can crop or rotate, for example, and that's it. We feared something similar from Picture Resize Genius, but the program turns out to have many useful features that make it worthwhile.

The program's interface is quite intuitive, with all of its functions well organized down the left side. Users can select one image, multiple images, or a folder full of images to be resized, and the program lists them all by file name for easy access. Users then select the functions … Read more

Intuitive slideshow maker

MySlideShow Gold is an easy-to-use program that allows users to create basic photo slideshows. We were pleased with the program's intuitive layout and useful--if not mind-blowing--features.

The program's interface is comprised of a series of panes and it took us a moment to get a grasp on how it was organized, but it soon became clear. One box shows a tree-style display of the contents of the user's computer, which makes it easy for users to navigate to the photos they want to use. Once they select the appropriate folder, its contents are displayed in another pane, … Read more

Trial limitations too strict

As one might suspect, Graphics Converter Pro gives people the capability to view and convert multiple image files. Not only was the program confusing to navigate, but also a trial restriction prevented us from completing our conversions.

The program's interface leaves a lot to be desired. Tiny command buttons line the top of the window. The purpose of each button is fairly obvious (Refresh, New Folder, Cancel Selection), but not in relation to what the program sets out to do. A Help file is included with the program, but it took some digging around and experimenting to figure out … Read more

Friendly but pointless picture viewer

PicViewer is a perfectly nice image viewer, but it offers few features beyond the native functionality of Windows.

PicViewer integrates Windows Picture and Fax Viewer into a Windows Explorer-like interface. It is easy to navigate and offers standard Explorer features such as the ability to Favorite a folder. It also provides a bit of automation, such as a menu option to move or copy images to another directory, and the ability to create a list of external applications, such as Adobe Photoshop, to open a selected image. But the few seconds you might save using PicViewer's pull-down menus instead … Read more

YouTube wants to offer film rentals

YouTube wants to offer movie rentals and is in talks with several top movie studios about obtaining licenses to stream feature films on a rental basis.

YouTube is discussing the service with Sony Pictures, Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., and Warner Bros. Studios, according to a story published Wednesday in The Wall Street Journal.

This is a natural progression for YouTube which has been engaged in a year-long campaign to secure more professionally made content. The Google-owned video company offers films on an ad-supported basis from Sony Pictures and MGM. YouTube declined to confirm or deny the Journal report.

One studio … Read more

Genealogical wonder

Whether you are a professional academic or a family-history hobbyist, GenoPro 2007 can undoubtedly meet your genealogical needs. GenoPro lets you do everything you would expect from genealogy software, such as create family profiles, link individuals, and add such information as birth and death dates. But where GenoPro excels is in the collection of additional metadata.

The best example of this is the program's options to characterize the emotional relationship between two people. The software cuts to the chase, offering such unique descriptions as Violence, Cut-off/Estranged, and Manipulative. Moreover, you are not limited to creating families: the software … Read more

Basic fish screensaver

Underwater Picture Screensaver is a basic screensaver featuring photos of sea life. Although the program works, it's rather short on both features and images.

The program's photos are of fairly high quality and feature beautiful fish. Unfortunately, there are only 12 images. This isn't a totally unreasonable number, but we would have liked to see more. We were also mildly annoyed by the fact that the publisher's Web address is displayed across the top of each image. The program offers a few options for customization. Users can choose to have the date and/or time shown … Read more

Photo shrinker

Picshare Image Resizer and Editor provides users with fantastic options to shrink and alter their digital photos. With a simple layout and easy tools, frequent photo editors will enjoy this program.

Picshare Image Resizer and Editor's interface is incredibly well planned. An online Help file is available should you need any extra guidance, but that's unlikely. With only a few controls reduced to the basics, users will quickly realize how natural this program feels. Users begin by choosing whether to convert an entire folder or a single image. Either way, users venture through a standard file tree to … Read more

Photo collage creator

Wonder Photo Studio provides users with a simple way to make fun photo collections. By providing lots of options and possessing a fantastic design, users of all skill levels will flock to this program.

The program's interface was a pleasure to operate, thanks to a well-planned design that newcomers and computer experts will enjoy. Its command icons are clear and on-screen directions practically eliminate the need for consulting the Help file. Users must first select a collage template. Though there are dozens of love- and fun-themed templates, but the trial only allows access to three. From there, users navigate … Read more

Isohunt judge says MPAA has yet to prove direct infringment

File-sharing sites haven't had a great year, especially in court, but on Wednesday they received a smidgen of good news.

The Motion Picture Association of America asked a federal court to rule that Isohunt was liable for copyright violations committed by its users, but the judge in the case was unconvinced. In his order, U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Wilson said the studios had yet to prove that the Isohunt's users had broken U.S. law.

Lawyers for the MPAA, the trade group representing the six major Hollywood film studios, are trying to convince the judge that … Read more
