Toy hydrogen cars look better than real thing

Toy cars that run on alternative energies are sometimes as impressive as their grown-up counterparts. Yet they often look like, well, toys (or even worse). But Corgi, in a partnership with Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies, has come up with a futuristic design that could easily be sitting on a full-size show floor. The "H2GO" is a remote-controlled miniature car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell that runs on water and solar energy, made of "lightweight, environmentally friendly, wheat-based plastics and boasts fully recyclable packaging," according to Pocket-lint. It even comes with its own refueling station. The … Read more

Researcher: Be wary of going-out-of-business sales

You might be tempted by the low, low prices, but going-out-of-business sales might come back to haunt you in the form of identity theft, says researcher Neal Krawetz of Hacker Factor. He posted a blog citing concerns over CompUSA closing all of its 103 stores. Bottom line: there currently is no regulation of or accountability for the sale of point-of-sale hardware that could contain credit card information and/or customer and corporate information.

Krawetz, who last year warned of existing vulnerabilities in how large chain stores regularly collect and store credit card information, says that customers need to be wary … Read more

First Look: Zagat To Go

Now in its fifth version, Zagat To Go, compatible with the PDA and platform in-crowd, gives locomotive users access to Zagat's sprawling database of cleverly amalgamated dining reviews and ratings for the best spots in town for food, service, and decor.

The mobile version of the gastro-household brand makes good use of cell phone technology to deliver maps and directions, though Zagat strangely passes up some low-hanging functionality that forces users to do extra legwork as a result. Watch the First Look video below or read the hands-on review for more detail.

Hard drive or pocket flask?

You know that business is tight when hard-drive manufacturers start competing for fashion designers to get an edge on one another. But Iomega just became our hands-down favorite for coming up with a portable version that's a looks just like an item that's near to our hearts, quite literally: a flask.

The company is touting its "eGo" line for having decent capacities (160GB to 250GB) at reasonable prices ($140 to $230), according to Slippery Brick. We, however, know subliminal advertising when we see it--especially when it's not so subliminal. All this 2.5-inch drive needs … Read more

How to fire a webmaster

Firing people on Wall Street can be particularly cruel. One minute you're an employee, then security guards show up at your desk, escort you out the building and you get your personal effects in cardboard box days later.

Businesses paying someone to run their website, don't have to be that cruel, but the basic risk is the same. One the person in charge of a website knows they are on the outs, there is a chance they may extract revenge by defacing the site. Businesses can protect themselves, by following the procedure described below for firing a webmaster. … Read more

Hands on: Yahoo Go 3.0 beta

This article has been updated to include new information.

Does the new Yahoo Go 3.0 beta herald Yahoo's new mobile strategy? That's what Yahoo would like you to think.

At first glance, the new Yahoo Go, a portal on the mobile phone to Yahoo's proprietary services--e-mail, Flickr, messaging, maps and directions, weather, and categorized news--looks strikingly similar to the old Yahoo Go. Sure, it's more celestial-looking with a burnished blue sky, pillowy clouds, and rays of emanating light that replace the bubbly signature yellow of its predecessor. But the carousel layout and offerings are essentially the same.

Here's what's not. The carousel is unfixed, which means users can delete Yahoo's default widgets and add their own for a much more tailored experience. The new Yahoo Go also makes use of keypad shortcuts. Pressing '#' gets you back to the carousel and '0' (zero) launches oneSearch. Reminders are tucked into most context menus.

The start screen is another brushup, helpfully summarizing your Yahoo inbox, and letting you add customized "snippets" of information, like a stock price, Web link, or RSS feed. Quick links are also shown on this page--users can select from various Yahoo services or include links to favorite Web sites. I liked both ideas, but questioned the implementation of a long, scrolling page layout that puts my quick links far below the snippet section, defeating the purpose of immediate access.… Read more

MTV Networks video, coming soon to a site near you

MTV Networks announced Tuesday that it will distribute its video content across the Web through deals with a number of social-media sites and video portals: GoFish, Veoh, MeeVee, and Imeem. Through this initiative, users of the video sites will be able to view both short- and long-form content provided by MTV Network as well as embed them on blogs and social-networking sites.

The partnerships will start to go live over the next few weeks; representatives from Imeem, for example, said that MTV Networks video content will appear on the social network, which focuses on ad-supported streaming media, in February.

Philips Rhapsody-ready portable video player

Philips has announced plans to release a new portable video player named the GoGear SA6500. The Philips PVP features a 4.3-inch wide-screen display, SDHC memory expansion, Rhapsody subscription music integration, built-in speakers, and an included pair of high-end, in-ear headphones. An 8GB version of the GoGear SA6500 (the SA6585) should hit shelves in July, priced around $200.

While a budget, flash-based PVP might not seem groundbreaking, one of the GoGear SA6500's most compelling features might be its multicodec, multiresolution support. Flash PVPs are sprouting up everywhere, but few support drag-and-drop video transfers without requiring tedious video conversion. Along … Read more
