Sarah Fisher: Crash at Indianapolis 500

Part of what reminded me about watching the 93rd Indianapolis 500 race this last weekend actually was Sarah Fisher's appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart to promote the upcoming race. As usual, Fisher came off very sweet and gave a fun interview (hard not to when your foil is Jon Stewart, after all) and much was made of how she was the first woman to be racing an eighth Indy 500...not bad, girlfriend. Well as you probably know by now, Fisher didn't win (though she finished 17th on the lead lap, and overall ranked 25th … Read more

Castroneves wins 2009 Indianapolis 500

This Memorial Day weekend, as usual, was the yearly host to one of the most historic American professional car race traditions: the Indianapolis 500. Well, this Memorial Day weekend was the host of the 93rd edition of the Indy 500, and what a race it was.

By the time the final lap, it becomes obvious that Helio Castroneves is going to finish first, and what a sweet victory it is for him.

Lutz to Letterman: 'We can't survive selling $100K cars'

The most recent battle over electric car technology isn't being fought in the showrooms, but on the set of the "Late Show with David Letterman."

GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz was invited on the "Late Show," giving him the opportunity to respond to Letterman's negative comments about the Chevrolet Volt, which is an extended range hybrid.

Not really understanding the concept of a plug-in hybrid, Letterman had previously called the 40-mile all-electric capacity "insane" on a previous episode during which Tesla CEO Elon Musk was a guest promoting the electric Model S sedan prototype.

Lutz offered his rebuttal on Wednesday, Chevy Volt in tow, and tried to explain why GM doesn't sell an all-electric vehicle and is instead is coming to market first with a plug-in. … Read more

Carl Long: A (rare) moment to remember

Earlier this week, I explained that I had chosen to focus on NASCAR for this week's blog because they had been in the news quite a bit lately. It turns out that it was a somewhat prophetic statement, as just a few days ago NASCAR made headlines again for suspending driver Carl Long for the next 12 Sprint Cup races. Not only that, but his chief crew member Charles Swing was fined $200,000, a record-setting fine for NASCAR. In addition, Long was penalized 200 points, another new NASCAR high. Story has it that Long and Swing were put … Read more

Earnhardt Jr., others in major Nascar wipeout

In my blog yesterday, I commented about an article I was reading on MSN.com about the need for heroes and villains in Nascar. In the article, Buddy Baker comments that the best way to become a "bad guy" in the world of Nascar is "Bumping Dale Earnhardt Jr.," who is genetic Nascar royalty (being the son of racing legend Dale Earnhardt Sr.).

I don't know if this wipeout officially made Brian Vickers a villain to Nascar fans, but I found this wild video of Vickers blocking Earnhardt at the 2009 Daytona 500, which led … Read more
