Quickly transfer files

This free, GPL-licensed FTP browser is a lean, mean, file-managing machine. Cyberduck can communicate with standard FTP volumes as well as SFTP, WebDAV, Google Docs, Google Storage, and Amazon S3. The application easily manages bookmarks with an OS X-styled drawer, and it's easy to import your bookmarks from other file-transfer apps if you want to try Cyberduck out. We like the quick-connect drop-down, which allows you to pop into recently accessed or bookmarked servers in a snap. We generally found both upstream and downstream file transfers to be speedy.

While Cyberduck can be seen as limited in terms of … Read more

Nintendo finally gets its Game Boy virtual console, and other 3DS surprises

It seemed obvious when the Nintendo DSi first debuted: offering classic Game Boy titles from Nintendo's decades-long back library would be a perfect fit and a no-brainer parallel to the Virtual Console on the Wii.

But it never happened. Now the upcoming Nintendo 3DS, which won't be released in the U.S. until 2011, will rectify this with a Virtual Console of its own, according to a Nintendo announcement released early this morning. That's great news, but there are a few more surprises that the 3DS unveiled--some of which we had been expecting in the Nintendo DSi, … Read more

Friendly financial management

We review a lot of personal finance software, and to be frank, most of it is pretty bad; such programs tend to have terrible, confusing interfaces and a decided lack of important features. Accounts and Budget Free is a happy exception to this trend. Although the program doesn't compare to the big-name financial software that dominates the marketplace, it's definitely a good choice for users who want a decent program without having to spend money to get it.

The program's interface is attractive and intuitive, with just a few menus and a handful of well-labeled buttons. Although … Read more

10 things Nintendo must fix before battling Apple

Two interesting things happened to Nintendo over the last few days. First, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, never afraid of bold statements, reportedly told his executives to consider the battle with Sony and Microsoft already won and has targeted Apple as the "enemy of the future."

The second? Nintendo released its Black Wii.

I find the first interesting because Nintendo and Apple, the reigning forces in family-targeted entertainment, seem to finally be eyeing each other. The second is interesting because I fielded a question to Nintendo about what Wii users should do with already downloaded games should they choose … Read more

File transfers come to iGoogle, Orkut; Gmail's next

Google has finally added one of the biggest omissions to the Web-based version of its Google Talk service: size limit-free, P2P file transfers.

The feature, which has been a part of the service's desktop software since mid-2006, went live on the Google Talk widgets inside of iGoogle and Orkut on Monday.

The endgame here--which Google says is coming, is to bring file-sharing into Gmail's integrated Google Talk. Imagine, if you will, a situation where you want to share a big file, and Gmail's attachment limit is just not cutting it. Your options are simple: you could hop … Read more

MacFixIt Mailbag: I need my old files!

A MacFixIt reader writes in to ask us how to retrieve his files from an old 400MHz PowerPC Mac tower--a machine that did not include any disc-burning capabilities. He also states that an external CD/DVD burner did not perform well enough to complete backups of the data. Here are some options to try out so you can get your data safely backed up.… Read more

PayPal 2.0: Send cash by bumping iPhones

PayPal has come full circle. What started as a PalmPilot app that let users wirelessly exchange money has evolved into an iPhone app that lets users wirelessly exchange money.

However, whereas Palm users relied on IR "beaming" to shoot funds back and forth, iPhone owners can simply "bump" their phones: The new PayPal 2.0 incorporates the same accelerometer-driven activator as the popular Bump app.

In other words, money can change hands just by knocking them together. What's the point of that? Well, say you owe your buddy $35.17--half of last night's bar … Read more

A new protocol for managing heavily trafficked and bottlenecked torrents, a transfer cap with real-time updates, and a smoother installation will remind you why this torrent client deserves the attention it gets. Check out what it can do in this First Look video from CNET TV.

SharePod: More than iPod backup and share

Apple makes extracting your music from your iPod unnecessarily difficult, and there's been a cottage industry of software tools designed to get around Apple's restrictive file-renaming conventions. Most of these programs charge you to use them, and of the free ones, few are exceptional at what they do. SharePod breaks the mold with useful features that work encased in a simple but appealing design.

It's a fast freeware tool for transferring your music collection from your iPod to your hard drive, making it easy to back up or restore your music, videos, and photos. It also transfers … Read more
