Crock-Pot stays hot in the end zone

Football season is upon us. That means months of football food lie ahead. As fall is ushered in by the kicking of an oblong ball, millions of cheering fans will be applauding the spread. No, not that kind of spread, the food spread. But no matter if the gathering is in the parking lot of the stadium or at a football party down the street, there needs to be a way to get the goods to the game.

A winning recipe for five-alarm chili just isn't worth it if it can't be shared among friends (or unleashed upon … Read more

Outperform steroids with this body-cooling glove

It looks like a hockey goalie's blocker glove, and indeed this mitt might help stop more pucks when fatigue takes its toll.

Stanford University researchers are working to improve a device that can rapidly cool the body after an intense workout, allowing faster recovery and performance enhancement that's "substantially better" than steroids.

The $3,000 CoreControl Glove has been on the market for some time. It uses a low-tech blood-cooling method to allow athletes to perform better and longer. Basically, cool water flows into a vacuum around the hand, cooling blood in the palm. … Read more

How to add your favorite sports teams to Google Now

Google Now is a bit creepy at times, there's no doubt about it. But, it's a fun service to use and it definitely provides some value to your Android experience.

Yesterday, Google released an update to the Search app, which powers Google Now. One of the features in the update allows Google Now users to add their favorite sports teams to the service, without having to rely on search history for your teams to show up in the app.

To add your favorite sports team, launch Google Now and scroll to the bottom of your list of cards. … Read more

Microsoft's best Windows 8 apps

Microsoft's Windows 8 apps are a decidedly mixed bag so far. But one group of apps shows how the new environment can shine with the right software.

I haven't been too impressed with many of the apps Microsoft has created for Windows 8. Some, such as Music and Video, are designed mostly to get you to buy stuff from the company, offering only minimal support for playing your own songs and videos.

Others apps, such as Mail, People, and Messaging, aren't bad but still seem half-baked and in need of further refinements. Mail, for example, still doesn'… Read more

Madden 13 on Vita and Kinect: New technology in the huddle

Late August doesn't usually mean much for video gamers...unless you're playing Madden. Like the swallows of Capistrano, the arrival of the next Madden has become inextricably associated with the start of football season for us...and, the start of Scott's endless obsession over the NFL Team We Shall Not Name. Madden as an actual game doesn't really merit much to talk about year in and year out...new rosters, slight tweaks that only a veteran player would appreciate, or game modes that few might spend the time to discover. Still, the NFL fans buy it, … Read more

Giants' Cabrera created fake Web site to avoid drugs ban?

Sometimes those you admire can have a very soft underbelly.

My San Francisco Giants this week lost outfielder Melky Cabrera to a 50-game drug suspension. His testosterone was elevated, so it was said. The Melkman seemed to have poured the cream of his career down the drain.

Couldn't he find an elevated reason to get out of the suspension, cynical, loving fans cried? This is what appeared to work for the Milwaukee Brewers' Ryan Braun, who found a loophole in the chain-of-evidence rules.

Today, allegations have emerged that Cabrera and some of his associates may have used to Web … Read more

Turner Sports reels in Bleacher Report

Bleacher Report, one of the largest sports news sites on the Web, was acquired today by Turner Broadcasting System.

The San Francisco-based startup focuses on delivering targeted sports news to about 10 million unique users a month. But unlike many sites whose content is written by a limited in-house staff, Bleacher Report relies on a wide network of mainly volunteer contributing writers around the country and the world who are passionate about the teams they love and who pen opinion and reaction pieces at a heavy pace in exchange for a prestigious slot on the site.

How SportStream adds the social element to viewing games

I'm a big sports fan, so I was happy to get my hands on SportStream, which promises to bring a sense of community to your sports-viewing experience.

Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed with the app, and felt it missed a big opportunity.

SportStream, which is available as an iPad app, is fairly simple. You pick a professional baseball, basketball, football, or hockey game, and are brought to a social feed page. The feed provides play-by-play updates, as well as notable tweets from bloggers, sports journalists, athletes, and other personalities.

There's a section to the right in which … Read more

Get rolling on a glow-in-the-dark skateboard park

I haven't tried doing an ollie on a skateboard in years, but this skate park in France looks like one of my teenage dreams.

Korean artist Koo Jeong-a has created a glowing collection of tunnels, ramps, and bowls that looks somewhat like a Tatooine ranch at night and reduces the need for harsh lighting.

The Otro park is fashioned of phosphorescent concrete. … Read more
