Last month I asked readers to submit essays for my "You can be the Audiophiliac for a day" contest. I received a lot of thought-provoking pieces, and I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to write. You guys are a smart bunch, but there can be only one winner, and I selected John O.'s "Chasing the Ultimate Sound System." His perceptive examination of the audiophile quest for great sound will reverberate with a lot of folks. The only thing I'd like to add is that the only person you need to … Read more
An artist's artist, nine-time Grammy-award-winning musician John Legend is sought after for collaborations by the likes of Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, Jay Z, and Alicia Keys. His fourth solo studio album, "Love in the Future," drops September 3. The music industry's respect for Legend is also the reason he'll be the first brand ambassador for Definitive Technology and its audio products, like the Sound Cylinder, a portable Bluetooth speaker that doubles as a tablet stand.John Legend chatted with us about his soulful new album, his collaboration with Definitive Technology, and how apps will change … Read more
Cat and Kitten Sounds for Android includes plenty of meow sounds, but you can't do anything with them but listen. If all you want is a generic, kitten-themed soundboard, it's probably right up your alley. However, if you're looking for notification tones or ringtones, you won't find them here. Without those, there's not much that makes this app better than a Web-based soundboard.
The app gives you a soundboard of about 50 different cat sounds. Each sound has its own icon, and you might recognize some meme cats like Limecat and Gentleman Cat. The cat'… Read more
Leaked from today's 404 episode:
- AOL still makes $600 million a year in Internet subscriptions.
- The creator of the iPhone's text message noise explains its origins.
- JewGlass: Google Glass app gives directions to Kosher restaurants and sets prayer-time reminders.
- Twitter messages can pinpoint restaurants with food safety issues.
Sound Volume Booster makes things louder, but it's almost impossible to use thanks to the rampant ads. Half the time, you won't even be able to get through the ads to get to the actual app. It might not be worth trudging through to get to the limited amount of audio boost it gives you.
Every time you load this app, it sends more ads at you than your phone can handle. It makes you agree to Airpush and other ad agreements that slide ads on your browser, home screen, and more, as well. More often than not, … Read more
Sound bars are a great way to improve on your TV's built-in audio, but they're typically made for TVs on the larger side. If you've got a TV that's 42 inches or less, you'll often end up with a sound bar that dominates your TV.
Vizio's looking to offer a better match for those small screen sizes, adding three more sound bars to its line that are specifically designed to fit smaller TVs. There's a 29-inch model (S2920W) that matches the width of 32-inch TVs, and two 38-inch models (S3820W and S3821w) that … Read more
Up until recently the classic, five-speaker home theater setup, with three front speakers -- left, center, and right, plus two surround speakers, and a subwoofer -- was the de facto home theater standard. According to Dolby, surround speakers should be placed to the sides and slightly behind your couch or main listening position. If you want to step up to 7.1 channel home theater the two extra surround speakers go behind the listening position, which is next to impossible if your couch is up against, or near a wall. If your room is large, and the couch is out … Read more
English Synonyms Dictionary with Sound is really two apps in one -- a thesaurus/dictionary and a text-to-voice reader -- both of which work but without anything more than the basics. Setup and use are straightforward, but for advanced features, certain words, and integration between the two functions, you'll likely need to look elsewhere as this app doesn't go beyond its core offerings.
There are two options when starting English Synonyms Dictionary with Sound. The first is to search for words that will then provide a basic definition and a list of synonyms. It really is a halfway … Read more
It's got to be the No. 1 audiophile fantasy: someday we'll have a breakthrough that allows speakers to perfectly reproduce sound. Once the engineers find a new way of moving air -- presumably a more accurate method than a vibrating cone, dome, or flat diaphragm -- the heavens will part and we'll suddenly hear the sound of real instruments and singers through our hi-fis. Not so fast -- that would be a great start, but once the sound leaves the speakers and interacts with your living room's acoustics, all bets are off. Put aside the perfect … Read more
Everybody loves Monoprice. I know this because whenever I mention, say, a cheap HDMI cable from any other source, readers invariably chime in to say, "I get all my cables at Monoprice."
A couple years back, the company branched out into its own line of tech products, including some surprisingly decent speakers at surprisingly low prices. Today, one of them is surprisingly even lower.
Today only, in fact, and while supplies last, Monoprice has its 8247 5.1-channel home theater speaker system for $71.11. It normally sells for $84.10, so the savings aren't that dramatic … Read more
