Tablets hurt, but cloud helps Intel

While tablet sales are passing Intel by, server sales are not, allowing the chipmaker to keep a healthy chunk of the global processor market.

Intel in the third quarter accounted for 83.7 percent of global microprocessor revenue, up about 3 percentage points from the same quarter last year and widening its lead over Advanced Micro Devices, which lost more than a percentage point, according to IHS iSuppli.

"The boom in media tablet sales has...both upsides and downsides for Intel--hurting its business in netbook microprocessors--but boosting its sales of chips used in data centers to support cloud computing,&… Read more

xPrintServer makes printers AirPrint-compatible

Ever since iOS 4.2, when Apple introduced AirPrint, which allows for printing from iOS devices, it's been painful for many people to find out that it only works with a handful of printers.

This means when you find out that your beloved printer is not on the supported list, you have two options: get a new one or try to hack your way into making it work. Neither is as easy as the third option that Lantronix announced today, the xPrintServer.… Read more

How bad is the hard disk shortage?

Intel's market-moving statement today that it expects a fourth-quarter revenue shortfall of roughly $1 billion has crystallized the impact of the hard disk drive shortage. So how bad is it?

A report last week from IHS-iSuppli said it's pretty bad--a preview of what Intel said today. That is, the flooding in Thailand will hit PC shipments in the first quarter. iSuppli says the shortfall will be about 3.8 million PCs.

And it will knock down PC numbers for the whole year. Global PC shipments for the whole of 2012 are now expected to expand by only 6.… Read more

Apple may build data center in Oregon

Apple is reportedly considering beefing up its data center muscle by building a new facility in central Oregon.

The tech giant is exploring the possibility of constructing a 31-megawatt data center on 160 acres near Prineville, Ore., people familiar with the matter tell The Oregonian. The company, which is negotiating with the city under the code name "Maverick," is expected to make a decision this month on whether to purchase the property, the newspaper reports. The property is owned by Crook County and is about a quarter mile south of where Facebook opened a server farm last year, … Read more

Windows 8 beta could debut as early as February

A public beta of Windows 8 will launch in late February of next year, says tech news site The Next Web.

Citing "sources close to Microsoft," TNW pointed to February for the beta's debut but said the release date for the final version of Windows 8 remains a mystery, though it's expected to ship next year.

Mary Jo Foley of CNET sister site ZDNet said she's heard that the beta would appear after next month's Consumer Electronics Show, which runs from January 10 to 13, but Foley said she isn't aware of any … Read more

Synology DiskStation DS712+ review: Best dual-bay NAS server to date

If you're in the market for a dual-bay network storage device, Synology's DiskStation DS712+ server will make the best investment.

Priced at around $500 with no storage included, the server is not cheap, but it's definitely worth every penny for those who want (and are able) to get the most out of home or small-business networking.

Like other NAS servers from Synology, the DS712+ runs a Linux-based operating system, called DiskStation Manager, and offers an incredible number of features for both home and business use.… Read more

Storage products bargain hunters should look for

For virtually anything to happen as expected in our daily life, computer storage is needed. If you think that's a grand statement, you, like most of us, have been taking storage for granted.

Despite the massive recent flood in Thailand that affected many storage vendors, hard drives, the most common form of computer storage, are still generally affordable (and abundant in terms of capacities). However, not all other forms of storage applications share the similar pricing as hard drives. And they can get progressively pricier the faster and the cooler they get.

Here's a list of storage devices … Read more

Nvidia CEO: Supercomputing gated by power

When it comes to imagining the future of computing, the biggest constraint is electrical power rather than raw computing horsepower.

During a keynote talk today at the SC11 conference on supercomputing in Seattle, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said that the graphics processor company now thinks in terms of "power limits" as it designs future products because power has become a limiting factor.

The company makes graphic processing units (GPUs) for video game consoles and professional workstations but its processors are also being used in high-performance computing. One of the primary reasons the Barcelona Supercomputing Center chose to build its system with Nvidia's GPUs and ARM-based CPUsRead more

WD ships Windows Storage Server-based business NAS

Western Digital announced today the WD Sentinel DX4000 NAS server for business environments.

The new four-bay server runs the Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials operating system on an Intel D525 Dual Core Atom processor.

Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 is superior to the current version of Windows Home Server and offers support for RAID configurations and iSCSI, which allows a portion of the network storage to be used by a computer as if it were a local drive. Because of this, the WD Sentinel DX400 supports RAID 1 and 5.… Read more

User tips for managing Mail password rejection

Recently we described a problem some people have been having with Apple's Mail e-mail client, where the program will request you to supply your account password but then continue to reject it.

The occurrence of this problem seems random, making it difficult to troubleshoot, but I suggested people try tackling problems with their keychains and the Mail preferences files as relatively general approaches to dealing with this issue. In response to our article, a number of readers commented or wrote in with tips on tackling this problem, with some of them being either quicker ways or additional areas that … Read more
