SOPA vote: Well, there's always next year

A marathon congressional hearing on the Stop Online Piracy Act, which detoured through discussions of Twitter-borne insults and the popular meme "The Internet is for Porn," was expected to resume sometime in 2012.

But Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a Utah Republican, said this afternoon on Twitter that the hearing will continue Wednesday morning -- but only if the U.S. House of Representatives is in session.

Any delay represents a victory for opponents of SOPA, who pulled off a quasi-filibuster by repeatedly presenting critiques of the controversial Hollywood-backed copyright legislation and offering over 70 amendments that sought to rewrite … Read more

Colleges, businesses snap up .xxx domains

Playboy's frequent portfolios of college women across the U.S. are bad enough--never mind the prospect of porn sites with names like "www.USCleazy.xxx."

That seems to be the thinking employed by colleges that, according to the Associated Press, are grabbing .xxx domain names to keep them off the market and prevent the sullying of their collegiate reputations.

The AP offers up the example of the University of Kansas, which, it says, spent nearly $3,000 to lock down names like "www.KUgirls.xxx" and "www.KUnurses.xxx."

Businesses, too, are buying … Read more

Facebook newsfeeds hit with animal-cruelty, Bieber spam

It's not comfortable for the home of FarmVille to be suddenly adorned with indigestible pictures of animal cruelty.

It also does little positive for Facebook's image of a safe and private bulletin board when there suddenly appear images of Justin Bieber doing things that might loosely be associated with fathering children.

And yet, as ZDNet revealed, newsfeeds of ordinary people have been positively awash in negative imagery.

It's hard to know just how much of it has been displayed. Technically, some might refer to this as gore-porn-linkspam. Others might prefer to think of it as just another … Read more

Apple to porn name squatters: Knock it off

A new complaint from Apple has porn cybersquatters in its sights.

In a filing with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which was picked up by Domain Name Wire, the iDevice and Mac maker takes aim at seven domain names that use Apple's trademarked term "iPhone."

The seven sites lead to Web sites that sell pornography, instead of being related to Apple or Apple products.

Those names include (and duh, none of these are safe for work): iphonecamforce.com iphonecam4s.com iphoneporn4s.com iphonesex4s.com iphonexxxforce.com iphone4s.com porn4iphones.com

As Domain Name Wire notes, whoever … Read more

Research: Web porn stops men from performing

Men in their 20s have a lot to worry about.

Will they ever get a job? Will they ever keep that job for more than a few months? Will they ever have enough money to pay their student loans and still be able to spend $100 a week on pot? Will they ever put their pants on the right way round at the first attempt?

Now it seems that something they do for recreation, in order to take their mind off their worries, is having increasingly worrying effects.

My hard-core reading of Psychology Today caused me to come across a … Read more

Covers gone wild: Are Amazon, Apple and B&N selling soft-core porn e-books?

They have names like "Bent Over," "Double Teamed," "Bedded by the Boss," and "Hot Daddy Cop." They're all part of a bawdier form of romance writing that's generally referred as erotica or erotic romance, and they're all in the Amazon Kindle catalog as well as Barnes & Noble's Nook catalog.

Needless to say, most of the books feature scantily clad figures, often intertwined, on their covers. Now, we're not prudes, but when a woman's bare behind shows up in the top 100 list on the Kindle (as is currently the case with "Bent Over"), you start to wonder whether someone over at Amazon might get a little concerned about its image and what the young folks who own Kindles might come across in their browsing. (Start clicking on "related titles," and things go downhill quickly--from the risque to the downright perverse.) … Read more

Xbox 360 tech to prevent kids from viewing porn?

If 11-year-olds can easily sign up to Facebook, surely they are smart enough to do all sorts of other naughty things--like downloading pirated TV shows and, well, other types of film that 11-year-olds should most definitely not watch.

It seems, though, that Microsoft, perhaps channeling the security philosophy of the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, is intending to do something about the rampant deterioration of our society's moral core and pip.

For Geekwire reports that the company has applied for a patent on technology that would allow it to guess the age of anyone using an Xbox 360 peripheral.… Read more

How the Web is less pornographic than you think

It's easy to believe that we are surrounded by smut.

Whenever people talk of the Web, they seem to be sure that it's merely a repository of naughty content for little boys who sit staring into their screens for 16 hours a day.

This may all be true. It also may be, though, that the little boys' activity is somehow balanced out by the righteous behavior of society's remainder.

My laps were positively dancing when I read a lengthy and stimulating Forbes piece which attempted to disabuse the nihilists and naysayers of the notion that the Web … Read more

Porn sites can now register for .xxx domain name

Porn and adult entertainment sites can now officially register under the .xxx domain, the domain's operator, ICM Registry, announced today.

The new .xxx top-level domain is open not just to porn sites but to nonporn sites that want to block the use of their names on the .xxx domain. Located in Florida, ICM is managing and supporting the new domain but will work with 50 individual registrars around the world to handle the actual registrations.

Promoting the advantages of .xxx to potential customers, ICM said that holders of the domain name will be able to tap into global marketing … Read more
