IBM today said it has acquired Platform Computing, a software company that focuses on grid management, for an undisclosed sum. For Big Blue, the acquisition bolsters its technical computing lineup.

The acquisition is expected to close in the fourth quarter. Platform Computing, based in Toronto, manages shared computing environments typically used in high-performance and technical applications. For IBM, Platform Computing, which has MapReduce and Hadoop applications, also bolsters its private-cloud and big-data management efforts.

Platform Computing's applications are targeted at financial services, manufacturing, oil and gas, life sciences, and government. All of those verticals are key areas for IBM. … Read more

According to new data out of Nielsen, 40 percent of U.S. mobile consumers now use smartphones, up from 30 percent just one year ago. And of those smartphones, Android takes the biggest share of 40 percent, followed by Apple's iOS at 28 percent.

Nielsen asked participants a number of questions to determine what kind of buyers they were in order to better understand their attitude toward new technologies. Google is enhancing its familiar Google +1 button to give people more control over the content they share and who they share it with.

Found on many a Web site these days, the +1 button lets people signed in to their Google account share and recommend specific content with their friends and contacts that can then appear as recommended pages in Google's search results. Hot on the heels of Google's launch of social gaming on its nascent Google+ project, Facebook's announced changes tonight to its gaming system that it says will make games easier to find and play.
