No special features

This free browser works, but doesn't offer users any compelling reasons to replace their current program. GreenBrowser is set up in the basic style of popular browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer.

The good news for new users is how intuitive the buttons feel and how quickly anyone familiar with those systems can adapt to GreenBrowser. Its homepage offers a variety of links to entertainment, technology, and news sites. The program also touts "special" features to auto-fill forms and prevent ads, but these have become standard in many browsers.

While GreenBrowser searched for sites and functioned properly, … Read more

Foxden runs multiple Web apps in one tab

Sites like Netvibes, My Yahoo, and iGoogle are great for organizing multiple feeds and widgets on a single page, but what about if you want to get your hands on full Web pages? New Firefox tool Foxden does just that, letting you set up a framed page that renders separate Web pages within the same space. This doesn't work on all sites, especially ones that like as much screen real estate as possible; but for some it's a handy way to consolidate pages you want to keep open without filling up your available tab space.

How to use Gmail's 'Multiple Inboxes' for extra Gmail accounts

When I heard the news that Gmail was offering "Multiple Inboxes" as part of Labs, the first thing that popped into my head was "finally--now I can check multiple accounts from the same place!" Unfortunately, that's not how it works.

Instead, Google's solution is simply to place the results from various filters and search queries off to the side of your main in-box. By default it sets you up with messages you've starred, and unsent messages from your drafts folder. This is nice and all, but you can hop to those two places … Read more

First 3rd-party iPhone Mail Client: Send Multiple Photos

A new iPhone application allows users to bypass the iPhone's inherent one-photo-per-email limit. Appropriately dubbed "Multi-Photo Email," the applications works by connecting to a user's SMTP server and sending photos as simple attachments. Users can designate a subject and body, in essence making this application the first third-party email client for the iPhone.

Multi-Photo Email includes the following features:

Pick photos directly from the library Import recipients from the Address Book Adjust photo quality and reduce photo size

The new app is priced at $0.99 and is available through the iTunes App Store.

Intel and DreamWorks go to the movies

Intel and DreamWorks Animation on Tuesday announced a strategic alliance designed to power up the movie studio's 3D authoring tools.

Faced with increasing demand for 3D animated feature films, DreamWorks will receive access to Intel's latest and future high-performance chips, including those with multiple processing cores. Intel's software engineers will also work with DreamWorks to tweak the studio's applications to run on an Intel-based computing infrastructure.

"Technology plays a significant role in enabling our artists to tell great stories. By utilizing Intel's industry-leading computing products, we will create a new and innovative way for … Read more

Use your laptop as a second monitor

If you ever get envious of those cool graphic design guys with multiple monitors, ask yourself, "Do I have a laptop?" If you do, you can run a multimonitor setup of your own. Watch our video version of this Insider Secret, then come back for the written details.

I must credit my co-worker Rafe Needleman for this idea. He saw me pecking away with my laptop monitor up one day and said, "Why don't you use that as a second monitor?" After I told him to frack off, I realized it wasn't a bad … Read more

Because everyone needs 30 monitors

Who knew that there would be an arms race in multiple monitors? First there was the six-screen "MasterPlex," then the eight from the Humanscale's hydra-headed display set-up. But all have been dwarfed by the 30 screens of 9X Media's top-end model.

The massive apparatus is customizable for as few as two monitors at a time, though that would hardly be any fun. Perhaps the most curious thing about this set-up--other than why anyone would need it, for personal use anyway--is the claim that it's an "ergonomic solution," as mentioned by BornRich. Because as … Read more

Dongle connects second display to PC

If you hate having to change the video card in your PC to support multiple displays, here's a way that can help save the hassle. The Logitec LDE-SX010U, which is expected to be released in Japan in mid-March, is a USB-to-DVI dongle that lets you connect additional monitors to your computer via the USB 2.0 port.

The Logitec dongle supports a maximum 1,400x1,050 pixels, which is the standard native resolution for most 19-inch panels. Up to six displays can be connected to one PC, according to Akihabara News, though a more powerful computer is recommended as … Read more

Doppler radar detects speeding hearts

The Army has turned to a Honolulu company for Doppler radar and advanced algorithm technology to be able to detect and monitor multiple subjects based on their heart rate, even through walls.

This means that soldiers will be able to detect someone hiding in a room before the door is kicked in, the company claims, and medics will be able to remotely perform triage and diagnoses or monitor casualties right through their flack jackets. It may also have homeland security and interrogation applications by allowing personnel to screen and identify individuals who may merit the third degree based on a … Read more

Multiplicity: Maximal home networking

Imagine a work space with three monitors standing side by side, each displaying a different work environment. E-mail and IM are pulled up on one monitor, Word processing is open on a second, and a spreadsheet graces the third. Now imagine the cursor flitting effortlessly between the screens, clicking, copying, and pasting from one to the other. One keyboard sits on the desk, and just one mouse.

This is no multimonitor setup; each screen here is controlled by its own computer. It isn't remote access software, either, since the controlling console is linked to the satellite computer. It's Multiplicity, and minus one rather large and glaring kink, it's pretty close to a multitasker's dreamware.… Read more
