After months of curiosity, Apple's iCloud service will finally be active on October 12, mere days away. While there's a lot we already know about Apple's device-wide set of cloud services, it's becoming clear that the concept is still a mystery for most people--and even, to some extent, for us. Yes, iCloud's still a little cloudy.

We know about document-editing, iTunes Match, photo streams, and cloud syncing of settings and app data, but here's what still confuses us as we approach the day where we'll be figuring it all out for ourselves.

You can redownload iTunes music...but can you erase it? The beta functionality that currently works in iTunes allows downloading previously purchased music: check. However, there's no way to manually delete tunes once downloaded to make room for other files. How can this be? Will iOS 5 fix this? It seems so, but perhaps only by deleting a song at a time. Apple managers today confirmed that the company is working hard to bring the iCloud and iTunes Match to other countries.

Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet software and services, told attendees at Apple's press event that iCloud will be rolled out in the United States on October 12, while Match will be available at the end of the month and cost $24.99 per year. Less than a day after opening up its iTunes Match service for developers to test, Apple has hit the brakes, keeping new developers from signing up to use the service.

In the new beta version of iTunes that contains the feature, Apple has replaced the sign-up tools with a note saying "iTunes Match beta testing has begun with an initial set of developers," and that "over the next days, we will continue to expand our testing. Please check back later to subscribe."

Turns out what appeared to be an iTunes streaming music service is really two functions--downloading and listening--occurring at the same time.

On Monday night, Apple developers thought they had found a streaming-music feature when Apple launched the iTunes Match developer beta earlier in the day.

But AllThingsD called Apple and was told: "Any music you want to access from your cloud-based 'locker' will still need to be stored on your iPad, or iPhone, or whatever device you're using to listen to the song."

A woman who sued Match.com claiming she was sexually assaulted on a date has settled her lawsuit after seeing proof that the site now screens its members for sexual predators, according to the Associated Press.

Carole Markin had sued the online dating site in April following the reported assault after learning that her date had previously been convicted of sexual battery. Rather than seeking financial damages, Markin's lawsuit asked that Match.com start reviewing its membership for signs of sexual predators.

Shortly after the suit was filed, the dating service announced a new policy whereby it would check its members against a national sex offenders registry. … Read more
