App developers ignoring NDAs, leaking iOS 6 screenshots

When Apple CEO Tim Cook said last month that the company is going to "double down on secrecy," he must have had a good idea how developers who leak information will be punished.

If so, those plans should be kicking in today, after what appear to be clear leaks by developers of screenshots from the forthcoming iOS 6 to news outlets like The Verge and BGR. Apple unveiled iOS 6 during its Worldwide Developers Conference keynote today in San Francisco.

All Apple app developers -- including CNET -- must agree to an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) before being given … Read more

LinkedIn posts update on password leaks

LinkedIn has posted an update on what it's doing to protect its members following the appearance, earlier this week, of millions of member passwords online.

"First," the post says, "it's important to know that compromised passwords were not published with corresponding e-mail logins. At the time they were initially published, the vast majority of those passwords remained hashed, i.e., encoded, but unfortunately a subset of the passwords was decoded. Again, we are not aware of any member information being published at any time in connection with the list of stolen passwords. The only information … Read more

Do yourself a favor, don't check if your password was leaked. Ever.

Earlier today rumors started sweeping across the Internet that LinkedIn account passwords had been leaked online. A few hours later, LinkedIn confirmed that the rumors were true; millions of account passwords had been compromised and posted online.

Almost just as fast as the story started spreading, a link to LeakedIn.org was being passed around as a way to check if your password was leaked in the security breach. To figure out if you're affected, LeakedIn requires you to enter your account password. Your password is then converted to its SHA-1 equivalent and then is compared to the list … Read more

The 404 1,068: Where it's a small world (podcast)

The time has come for every Internet denizen to take a stand against the worst atrocity (and probably the biggest problem) on the Web: vertical videos. Big thanks to the puppets in this PSA spreading the word about Vertical Video Syndrome.

You can blame Flip video cameras, the ubiquity of videos shot with an iPhone, or just the tech-ignorance masses, but it has to stop. With the help of Ariel, Richard, and Joseph on today's episode, we all hope to put an end to the vertical video travesty.… Read more

New 13-inch MacBook Pro specs leaked early?

Speculation abounds that Apple will be launching a new MacBook Pro line in the coming weeks. And now, a leaked image has surfaced claiming to show off some new features.

A forum poster on Chinese Web site Weiphone claims (Translate) to have received an image from a U.S.-based Apple employee of the spec sheet for an upcoming 13-inch MacBook Pro. And although the changes to that device are not major, the list includes mention of a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, upgraded from the 2.4GHz option already available in the cheaper 13-inch model.… Read more

That pesky taller iPhone 5 screen pops up on video

What may or may not be the larger screen adorning the next iPhone has been captured on video.

No, you won't see the actual screen. Instead it's the glass panel that your fingers and face grease up.

Japanese Apple blog Macotakara today published a visual comparison of the mystery part that's been floating around for the past few days, putting it next to the existing iPhone to show just how much bigger the screen would be:

The two notable changes, of course, are that the screen is taller, and that the FaceTime camera has been moved to … Read more

U.K. court: Assange can be extradited

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange can be extradited to Sweden to face questioning about allegations that he committed sex crimes, the U.K. Supreme Court has ruled.

Six law lords today said that the WikiLeaks editor can be extradited to Sweden under a European arrest warrant, as requested by Swedish prosecutors. Assange was not present to hear the London court's ruling.

"The request for Mr. Assange's extradition has been lawfully made, and his appeal has been dismissed," said Supreme Court president Lord Phillips as he handed down the court's decision.

The decision was not unanimous, with … Read more

Ice Cream Sandwich leak spotted on Droid Razr

Ice Cream Sandwich leaks are dripping all over the Motorola Droid Razr today with Android 4.0 apparently spotted on Verizon's fancy thin phone.

Droid Life posted the screen shots from a reader who claims to have gotten ahold of a build with the same file size as the file listed in Verizon's leaked update schedule that I reported on earlier today. That leak appeared to show plans to push out an over-the-air upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich for the Razr beginning on May 21.

I was also whining earlier about the false alarm upgrade I received to my own Droid Razr earlier this week that turned out to be an incremental Gingerbread update, but if rumors are true, that could have been the build required to lay the foundation for the imminent Android 4.0 upgrade.

Baby steps, I suppose. Unless, of course someone wants to share a Dropbox folder that just happens to contain that leaked Ice Cream Sandwich build with me....… Read more
