Report: Mobile app demand to explode by 2012

Worldwide demand for mobile applications is set to explode in the next three years as the total value of the market could grow to $17.5 billion, according to a new report released Wednesday.

A study commissioned by GetJar, the second largest mobile app store in the world, predicts that mobile downloads will climb to 50 billion in 2012 up from about 7 billion in 2009. This rapid uptick in downloads will generate about $17.5 billion in revenue for the mobile app market. The mobile market was worth about $4 billion at the end of 2009.

Phones you can't get on a U.S. carrier

Sadly, the U.S. is often behind the times when it comes to handsets and mobile technology. Our European and Asian brethren usually get first dibs on all the cool gear, and sometimes, we won't even see it at all. Sure, we can get some of the fancier Sony Ericsson and HTC phones unlocked, but few U.S. carriers actually pick them up. Still, some of the phones do support U.S. bands, so that's an upside. Take a look at our slideshow of phones you can't get from a U.S. carrier to drool over and … Read more

Video to go

Every now and then you stumble across something really great on YouTube that you want to save to your computer for later viewing. There are a plethora of programs that do this, but GetYouTube is an extension for Chrome that lets you save YouTube videos using nothing but your browser.

GetYouTube integrates well with Chrome--a little too well. Unlike many extensions, it didn't place an icon to the right of the address bar. There was no trace of it at all. The publisher's description tells users to select a format from a dropdown list and click a button. … Read more

Focus on the task at hand

OmniFocus is a high-powered, flexible, feature-filled task-management app that's based on the widely used Getting Things Done (GTD) productivity method, but it's designed to accommodate a variety of work styles. OmniFocus uses a GTD-esque approach ("Capture, Organize, and Do") to handle actions, projects, and contexts. You work in a relatively clean, two-pane interface, with folders and projects in the sidebar and grouped actions in the main outline (where you add, edit, and check off actions).

Within this interface, it's easy to set up versatile contexts for your actions, distinguish between sequential and parallel actions within … Read more

Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White turn it up to '11'

"It Might Get Loud" is definitely one of the best rock documentaries I've seen in a while. Thankfully, it doesn't have a narrator spouting somber lines about the importance of it all. You don't have to suffer through inserted clips of celebrities and other musicians babbling about how great Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White are.

The filmmakers cover the three guitar greats individually doing their things, but the film is at its best when the musicians get together on a film sound stage to talk shop and jam.

There's a great little … Read more

Diss player

Amphony's iGetMusic offers an alternative for free, legal song downloads. However, the idea is better than the actual program, which is full of tedious work that fails to impress.

The program's interface looks very professional, and there's a detailed Help file. Because of all the manual input it requires, however, we never felt comfortable with iGetMusic. Things got off to a bad start when the program required a total realigning of our Internet browser's proxy settings just to move on to the second step of downloading. This also needed a great deal of entering and reentering … Read more

Boring role-play

We have to admit that we were prepared to be offended by Get Tiffany. The idea of male characters fighting over a woman sounded rather sexist and obnoxious. The truth is, Get Tiffany is too boring to even be offensive.

The premise of Get Tiffany is that four players are competing for Tiffany's attentions by both trying to woo her and trying to block the advances of their competitors. The program's interface and graphics aren't bad, but there's nothing visually impressive about the game; users can customize their character to some extent, but the bulk of … Read more

GetJar: The unknown app store leader

I'm sure you've heard of Apple's App Store for the iPhone. But have you ever heard of an independent mobile app store called GetJar?

No? Well, that's not surprising. The tiny company now based in Silicon Valley has done virtually no marketing. And yet in the nearly five years it's been around, the company has managed to build the second largest application store front for mobile phones in the world, likely making it the biggest mobile app store you've never heard of.

The privately held Getjar claims it has nearly 57,000 applications in … Read more

When the Rolling Stones were the world's greatest band

The Rolling Stones really were the world's greatest rock and roll band in 1969. That was 40 years ago, but if you need proof to verify the ancient claim, check out the "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! The Rolling Stones In Concert--40th Anniversary Deluxe Box Set."

The Stones' live shows of the '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s were spectacles of frenzied energy, extravagant sets, video projections, and lots of flash, but "Ya Ya" was the real deal. The five Rolling Stones were the show, and that was more than enough. If you're going to only buy one live Stones CD, get "Ya Ya."

The original album was recorded over two nights at Madison Square Garden; I was there at one of those shows. I had a great time and bought the LP as soon as it came out. Still have it.

Keith Richards and Mick Taylor's yin vs. yang guitar styles meshed perfectly on "Midnight Rambler" and "Sympathy For The Devil." Mick Jagger and Richards paid tribute to the man who invented rock and roll, Chuck Berry, with a romping "Little Queenie." The new box set includes the original version on CD, plus a five-song EP from the same shows, with unplugged performances of "Prodigal Son" and "You Gotta Move." Sound quality is really good for a 1960s-era live recording, but I prefer the sound of the single disc "Ya Ya" SACD that came out in 2002, at least when it's played on a SACD player. … Read more

Free music finder

Music MP3 Get offers to track down a song by scouring social networking sites. With an incredibly easy layout and impressive results, this is a great way to find favorite tunes.

The interface felt so natural to us, we happily skipped the program's instructional online Help file. With only a few command buttons and an intuitive layout, we were in business in a matter of seconds. We were surprised by how quickly this program worked, especially since it had to scan several networking sites for songs. We entered our artist in the search engine and a few seconds later … Read more
