Stomp some baddies in Mario Converse sneaks

We've been having a classic-video-game kind of time here at Crave recently, what with our sister site CNET News revisiting one of the old-schoolest of them all--Spacewar--and Crave itself reminiscing about all the quarters we scrounged (and promptly fed to Pac-Man) back in the days of the old arcade.

It's no wonder, then, that we've got an itch to make like Mario, touch us some Super Stars, and stomp us some enemies.

Luckily, it looks like Converse is set to hand us just the footwear for the job. According to blog Highsnobiety, the shoemaker plans to release the pictured sneaks--the Converse One Star Super Mario Bros. OX--this coming March, in Japan (apparently no pricing info is available yet). We're hoping we'll be able to track them down online.… Read more

Muscle-covered leggings take the skin out of skintight

We've got just the tights to wear to your upcoming anatomy exam.

With these "Muscles Leggings"--whipped up by designer James Lillis for Black Milk Clothing--there's no way you'll fail (at least not when it comes to the waist-down part of the test).

Then again, it might be more fun to think about slipping into these the next time you visit one of those Body Worlds-type exhibits--you know, the ones with real flayed bodies riding horses or playing basketball? How many people would frantically hail a security guard to report an errant artifact?

Or you could don them for that other, hands-on anatomy class of yours--the one with the cadavers and instrument trays--and run teary-eyed to the instructor crying, "Damn it! I told you Bart needed glasses!"

The possibilities for pranking seem plentiful.… Read more

Superheroes + math + men's room = wacky shirt

The fashionista squad here at Crave is all for outlandish socks (the Silicon Valley fashion statement du jour). But we still love a good T-shirt. Especially if it features a rather off-kilter take on a nerdy icon or two.

Milan-based designer Matt Cowan has some tees that fit the bill. His various "mathematics" designs should appeal to nerds who favor comics, "Star Wars," graphic design, and math. The pop-culture mash-ups combine superheroes, supervillains, and others with the internationally known symbol signs for the men's room and the women's room to create absurd mathematical equations.… Read more

Cufflinks with Wi-Fi hot spot turn you into a digital 007

Let's face it. What's the point of wearing any fashion accessory that doesn't help you move your data around? I mean, that would just be a waste.

Fortunately, Brookstone has you covered with this slick pair of Wi-Fi-enabled cufflinks. These silver oval 'links keep your cuffs together without the embarrassment of using some silly analog plastic buttons, and also double as a USB thumbdrive with 2GB of storage and an embedded wireless hot spot. … Read more

Clothing site features naked man in children's ad

The uptight can sometimes not understand the liberal.

Some feel that's why some Americans don't understand the French. Yet who can possibly understand how it was that the French clothing retailer La Redoute managed not to notice a naked man in an ad featuring children?

The way the BBC exposes it, the picture was there for all to see for almost a day before someone realized that there, in the water behind the happy little kids, was a happy old chap, naked as the day is long.

Because most people in the world have nothing better to do … Read more

Crave 71: Princess Leia's dirty secret (podcast)

"Star Wars" is great, but "Star Wars" on your head is much better. The Crave team discusses this idea in depth in this first episode of 2012, along with Jell-O dispensers for grown-ups, StarCraft in Legos, and harmonizing hobbits.

Apres-ski the 'Star Wars' way

Sure, your kids looked pretty adorable out there on the slopes in their R2-D2 snowboarding helmets. We hate to break it to you, though: the droid look wasn't quite cutting it during the apres-ski cocoa-quaffing session. (Definitely weren't the droids we were looking for. Nope.)

We're thinking some cozier headgear would've been a bit more apropos. A helmet, after all, looks a tad out of place indoors. Unless, of course, it's--gasp--a custom crocheted Boba Fett helmet!… Read more

Crave 70: Buying back the '80s (podcast)

For our last Crave of 2011, Bonnie and Donald revisit the '80s with a retro Walkman case, bad Apple fashions, and a look at Crave photo submissions that have been Instagrammed into blurry, oversaturated works of art.

And whether it's by ground or by sea, Crave has the latest high-tech methods for risking your life in pursuit of fun. In Geek News, Lego goes LOTR, and Batman goes Lego.

Fashion site Nerd Boyfriend finds its Nerd Girlfriend

Trendsetting fashion site The Sartorialist be damned! Everyone knows the geeky guys featured on Nerd Boyfriend dress much, much classier.

And now it looks like the geeky girls will get their own chance to stumble strut down the virtual runway too.

Hubba hubba: Nerd Girlfriend has arrived!

Debut "cover girl" Gilda Radner is somewhat surprisingly not in Lisa Loopner garb, but then, that's one of the things we've always liked about Nerd Boyfriend: in addition to nailing the thick-rimmed stereotype in spot-on but unexpected ways, NBF is very good at offering up a nerdy revelation or two.

In part that's because the site doesn't limit "nerd" to the tech-, science-, or intellectually oriented. And we agree: a nerd is a nerd--and though we might not always be able to define the term with slide-rule precision, we know one when we see one.… Read more

1986 Apple fan fashion flashback

There was once a decade when it was cool to have popped collars, leg warmers, and zippers on the ankles of your acid wash jeans. It was called the 1980s.

Even design-obsessed Apple wasn't immune from the decade's fashion fallacies. Fashion blog The Trad unearthed a 1986 Apple clothing catalog that looks like a collision between "The Breakfast Club" and an Apple II.

The catalog really sells the Apple computing lifestyle. "After a rough day windsurfing, the Apple sweatshirt is just the thing," it reads. Or you could buy a complete Apple-branded F2 America 360 Sailboard for just $1,100.… Read more
