Google pitches Exchange backup with Postini

Google continued to remind enterprise IT managers today that it wants to provide alternatives to Microsoft's e-mail products.

With the launch of Google Message Continuity, an e-mail backup service, Google wants to get a toehold in companies that run Microsoft Exchange servers for e-mail by offering themselves up as a backup solution should something go wrong with those servers. The idea is that in the event of an Exchange outage, workers could sign into Google accounts and get their regular work e-mail as usual through Google's interface.

The real idea, of course, is to convince more and more … Read more

iOS 4.2.1 bugs causing Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 issues

As Apple continues to make its case for the iPhone (and iOS) being a better business phone solution, bugs in iOS 4.2.1 are causing problems for people using Microsoft Exchange 2003.

The issue arises specifically when using the Calendar App for events. When accepting or creating a calendar event invitation, users find that the invitation e-mail will not send to the intended recipient. TiPb reports that the problem seems to lie with the ActiveSync system on Exchange 2003.

Also problematic is the fact that some calendar events (whether accepted or created), when added to the Calendar App on … Read more

It's World Series time, and if you're a fan of either the San Francisco Giants or the Texas Rangers looking for tickets to any of the sold-out games being played over the next few days, don't despair: You can get in.

Of course, it's not going to be cheap. Since the only tickets that are available are on the secondary market, they're going to cost substantially more than face value. Opera gets into mobile advertising

Mobile-browser maker Opera is set to announce today that it's dunking a toe into the mobile-advertising sea. Opera's new Open Mobile Ad Exchange service is a cloud-based ad platform that will work with publishers to place ads onto mobile-browser pages.

While Opera is shopping the pages of its Opera Mini browser first, the company hopes to carry its advertising service to other mobile browsers. The service works by embedding JavaScript into the Web pages that Opera serves; however, the ads will not appear in the Opera browser interface itself, only the page contents. Opera is calling its service … Read more

SEC: Big trade caused market plunge in May

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) released a joint report Friday that detailed the cause of the "flash crash" on May 6 that triggered the Dow Jones Industrial Average to plummet almost 1,000 points in the course of a half hour. The culprit, the report found, was a single $4.1 billion trade carried out by a computer-based sell order.

"This report identifies what happened and reaffirms the importance of a number of the actions we have taken since that day. We now must consider what other investor-focused … Read more

Microsoft's hosted services hit a rough patch

Users of Microsoft's hosted versions of Exchange and SharePoint have had to endure a bumpy last couple of weeks, with at least three service interruptions or outages.

Microsoft said in a blog post this week that all of the issues were related to a change in networking infrastructure that the company made last month. The company attempted to fix the issue after a two-hour service interruption on August 23, but the fix didn't solve everything and there were further problems on September 3 and again on Tuesday.

"We aspire to deliver quality services, and in the last … Read more

App not selling? There's a place to sell its code

Back at the World Wide Developers Conference in June, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that the company had paid out more than a billion dollars to application developers through the App Store. But what about those developers who had created something that hadn't sold so well?

There's a new service from application tracking site iPhone Application List, called the App Exchange that is playing matchmaker to such developers. There, they can effectively offload their creation to another party who might be able to do a better job, or at least use some of the app's technology in … Read more

$100 million settles Dell accounting-fraud charges

Dell said on Thursday that it will pay $100 million to settle charges that it engaged in fraudulent accounting practices to appear to be meeting Wall Street earnings targets.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission probe into the company and chairman Michael Dell, which has been previously disclosed, alleged that Dell "failed to disclose" payments from Intel to use its processors and "materially misrepresented" the reasons for its improving profitability.

Dell said in a statement that it and its chairman agreed to the settlement without admitting any wrongdoing or illegal activities.

The payment isn't … Read more
