Jailbreaking software already works for 3.0.1 iPhone update

So Apple on Friday released an update to the iPhone OS (3.0.1) that takes care of an SMS vulnerability. It's a fairly important patch, and usually when Apple updates the iPhone OS, jailbreakers have to wait until the Dev Team comes out with a new version of jailbreaking software before they can update.

But according to the iPhone Dev Team's Twitter, this is not the case with the 3.0.1 firmware. In fact, the current versions of redsn0w and ultrasn0w work the same with the 3.0.1 firmware as they do with the 3.… Read more

iPhone OS 3.0 unlock released, excludes 3GS

The iPhone hacking group known as the Dev-Team has released UltraSn0w, an unlocking utility for 2G and 3G iPhones running iPhone OS 3.0. The new utility is easy to use and lets you unlock your jailbroken iPhone for use on a variety of carriers (such as T-Mobile or AT&T in the U.S.). However, it does not support the iPhone 3GS at this time, but, according to the Dev-Team, future releases will support the new hardware.

Japanese game developers making googly eyes at iPhone

As a lifetime console gamer, it probably comes as no surprise that I have a certain affinity for games made in Japan. Seriously, give me a single-player Japanese RPG over the American equivalent any day of the week.

Given this, the news that more Japanese game developers want to develop on the iPhone has me giddy as a schoolboy! And I've never been giddy, even when I was a schoolboy.

CasualGaming.biz reported Thursday on a survey conducted by Japanese middleware developer CRI. The survey polled 102 Japanese game developers (individuals, not companies).

Eighteen percent of those surveyed had … Read more

iPhone App installs over USB: Another threat to iTunes App Store?

Reports of non-Apple-sponsored app stores have hinted at threats to Apple's own iPhone's iTunes App Store. Now, another front in the war against the iTunes App Store may be developing: a new application, currently under development, will allow users to install iPhone and iPod Touch applications onto their jailbroken devices using a USB connection.

The app, called Installer, has been around for awhile and was originally created to install applications directly from your jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch desktop. Rip Dev recently upgraded that application, long popular, to version 4.1. However, a new version for the desktop … Read more

Unlocking the iPhone 3G - or maybe not

Gadget blogs on New Year's Day were aflutter with word that an application called Yellowsn0w was available for those who want to unlock the iPhone 3G.

CrunchGear, for one, posted a graphically enhanced, QuickPwn-focused spin on jailbreaking the iPhone and making use of the Yellowsn0w instructions from the Dev-Team Blog. Way at the bottom, though, it points out that "this is all in beta and there is no guarantee of success." It follows with this note:

UPDATE - I haven't been able to get it to work on two iPhone 3Gs, both with fresh 2.2 … Read more

iPhone 3G Unlock Video Demo Posted

The iPhone dev team has released a video demonstration of the iPhone 3G unlock, which is due to be released on December 31, 2008.

The video is embedded below, but can also be seen on the iPhone dev team blog. It shows an AT&T SIM-locked iPhone 3G being unlocked, then successfully accepting a T-Mobile SIM card and receiving a call.

The unlock process looks pretty simple, requiring only a script to be run from a connected computer (a system running Mac OS X in the video). "MuscleNerd," who posted the video, claims that a daemon will … Read more

iPhone 3G software unlock to be released shortly

The iPhone Dev Team is promising a software unlock for the iPhone 3G by the end of 2008.

Back in October the iPhone Dev Team signaled they were getting close to their goal, and Tuesday they announced that a software download would be available on New Year's Eve. The iPhone 3G has presented problems for those looking for a simple way to use their phone on the mobile network of their choice after Apple fixed a loophole that left the original iPhone wide open to unlockers.

There are ways to manipulate the SIM card that comes with the iPhone … Read more

iPhone Dev Team releases 2.2 jailbreak

An unlocked iPhone 3G appears to be closer to reality.

Just two days after Apple released its iPhone 2.2 update, the iPhone Dev Team has released a so-called jailbreak of the firmware.

The team of hackers on Saturday posted to its blog QuickPwn for 2.2 and PwnageTool for 2.2 for Windows and Macintosh machines, along with instructions on how enable iPhone 3Gs with the 2.2 firmware to accept third-party applications.

The blog also includes a word of caution about baseband, the chip that controls the connection between the phone and the mobile-phone network:
