Can Sun rise to the cloud-computing challenge?

As a former employee of Sun Microsystems, I've been fascinated for some time about what the cloud can do for its troubled fortunes. The company has amazing cloud DNA, in terms of technology and talent.

Sun is a company of engineers founded by engineers to engineer for engineers. They've got the technology chops to do something great here, as can be evidenced by some of the interesting things to come out of Sun Labs in the last year or two.

In the last few weeks, Sun finally took direct action for the cloud, and it reorganized its software division to take the cloud challenge head-on. So it was with great anticipation that I listened on Tuesday to a discussion between Dave Douglas and Lew Tucker about Sun's interpretation of the cloud market, and Sun's potential place in it. (The slides are also available.)

This was more of a "placeholder" presentation--certainly not a major announcement--but Douglas and Tucker laid out a foundation of concepts, and then outlined how Sun can work to address the opportunities this market creates.… Read more

Audio: 'Watchmen' artist Dave Gibbons talks movies, Martha Washington

Readers of Crave and fans of all things geek may have read my impressions of the Watchmen Motion Comics over the last few months. If not, well first off, shame on you, but through the magical powers I wield--and the Internets--you can check them out here and here.

Produced by Warner Premiere, the Watchmen Motion Comic is basically the original Watchmen comic, now animated with voice, music, and sound effects. If you're a comic book fan or you're just intrigued by Watchmen thanks to the upcoming movie's hype, it's worth checking out. If you don't … Read more

Open Season becomes Open Sources: Episode 2 now online

Dave Rosenberg and I joined up again to record another Open Season Sources podcast: the big Number Two. We talk a lot about open-source investing and purchasing in the economic downturn, as well as some of the work Salesforce, Cisco, and others are doing.

As with the first of the Open Sources podcasts, it's relatively short and to the point. Enjoy!

Microsoft Blue Hat starts on Thursday

Microsoft's eighth Blue Hat conference will take place on Thursday and Friday at the software giant's Redmond, Wash., campus. Entitled "C3P0wned," the invitation-only conference features two full days of sessions.

Day one features a select group of security researchers, with team members from Microsoft Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) presenting on the second day. It is an opportunity for Microsoft engineers to hear first hand from leading security researchers. The last Blue Hat conference was held in April.

Of interest on day one is a talk by Dan Kaminsky, director of penetration testing at IO Active, who … Read more

Sony's 'David Blaine' starts 30 days of living in display window

I don't know if there's a Guinness Book of Records world record at stake here, but as part of its effort to promote its digital book readers, including the just-announced PRS-700, Sony has "memory expert" Dave Farrow sitting in a window display in New York reading books all day for the month of October.

As we reported Thursday, the sit-in--or read-in--is timed to commemorate National Book Month and promote literacy in schools. According to Sony, for every one of Farrow's page turns, Sony will provide a set of 100 eBook classics to a school or … Read more

Sony kicks off its Reader Revolution

Starting October 1, if you walk by one of Sony's stores in Manhattan, chances are you will see Dave Farrow, the Guinness World Record Holder for memorizing 52 decks of cards randomly shuffled together, sitting by the storefront reading out of Sony's digital Reader. No, his incredible memory hasn't turned him out of his mind.

To help combat a general decline in reading in the U.S., particularly among young people, and to promote its digital Reader, Sony is spearheading a so-called "Reader Revolution" to engage the public in digital reading.

Dave Farrow is part … Read more

Open-source founders doubling up on startups

I was confused when Dave Rosenberg told me that he was leaving MuleSource to pursue a game startup. "But you are already the CEO of a startup," I remonstrated. Given his longstanding interest in video games, however, it was probably just a matter of time.

Of course, that was nothing next to my confusion when I kept reading about Digium-founder Mark Spencer hanging out with Marc Fleury, working on an open-source home automation project called OpenRemote. The OpenRemote blog suggests that Digium remains Spencer's primary home, but that he moonlights as the principal hardware designer for OpenRemote.

This morning Dries Buytaert of Drupal/Acquia fame confused me further by announcing Mollom, a "startup Benjamin Schrauwen and [Buytaert] began to help keep your website free of spam."

I asked Jeff Whatcott, vice president of Marketing for Acquia, the company that Dries co-founded, whether Dries was still fully engaged with Acquia, and he told me,… Read more

McAfee brings nearly instant malware updates

What if your desktop security application could detect and remove a new threat that was only minutes old? That's the impetus behind McAfee Artemis Technology, announced on Monday.

Artemis, which McAfee plans to market within its 2009 consumer products as "Active Protection," is not focused on hourly updates, or even 15-minute updates, as rival Symantec has. It means instant detection, said Dave Marcus, director of security research and communications for McAfee Avert Labs.

McAfee's use of Artemis is similar to Trend Micro's use of cloud-based computing to analyze and produce new signature files within 15 … Read more
