Print, copy, and scan with $28 all-in-one

If you thought the $34 HP DeskJet F2110 printer/scanner/copier was a good deal, try this on for size: Wal-Mart has the Lexmark X3430 printer/scanner/copier for a mere $27.88.

The X3430 combines a tri-color inkjet printer with a flatbed scanner and copier. It can churn out documents at up to 17 pages per minute (according to Lexmark) and scan to PDF or OCR. It prints 4x6-inch borderless photos and includes slots for most kinds of memory cards. It also has a basic control panel, something the HP lacks.

The printer relies solely on tri-color ink cartridges (… Read more

Pump up your home office with a wireless all-in-one printer, $129.99 shipped

To paraphrase Arthur Clarke, printing without wires is indistinguishable from magic. I mean, remember when you needed a big fat parallel cable to send documents from PC to printer? Now all you need is air (and a Wi-Fi router).

JR.com has the Brother MFC-685cw, a seriously well-equipped multifunction printer, for $129.99 shipped. Among the highlights: compact design, a built-in phone with answering machine, and both wired and Wi-Fi network compatibility.

You can read CNET's full review here, but I'll summarize in case you're in a hurry: It's packed with features, but it's also … Read more

Print, scan, and copy with $34 all-in-one

Ooh! Here's what you can do with the $34 you save on the iPod touch. (See previous post.) Wal-Mart has the HP DeskJet F2110 all-in-one printer for exactly that price, though you will have to pay shipping and/or sales tax.

The F2110 prints, scans, and copies in color. It features a 100-sheet input tray and works with Windows and Mac systems. You can find the complete specs on the product page--and almost nowhere else. Curiously, this model doesn't appear on HP's own site. Too new? Maybe a Wal-Mart exclusive? I'm not sure, but I can … Read more

Print, fax, copy, and scan for $59.99 shipped

All-in-one printers are insanely handy to have around. Consider: you can make copies--color copies--without having to run out to Kinko's. You can send faxes on those rare occasions when e-mail won't do. You can scan documents for electronic storage. Oh, and you can print.

Most of these multifunction wonders start at around $100, but Buy.com is offering the Lexmark X8350 for $59.99, shipped, after a $50 mail-in rebate.

The specs look pretty typical for an all-in-one, but with a few highlights. First, you can connect your digital camera or pop in its memory card, preview photos … Read more

A printer that serves two markets

Because Fuji Xerox Printers is better known in office circles than in the home, we didn't think we'd have much to write about its new DocuPrint C1110B laser printer. After all, most of its stuff are specific for a demanding office environment. The C1110B can output at 12ppm (color), start up in 16 seconds and kick one page out the barrel in 12. It also has a decently deep media tray that can store half a ream's worth of A4-sized paper (250 sheets) and accommodate an assortment of paperweights.

Then we saw the price. At $310, it'… Read more

From Japan comes the virtual copy repair man

CHIBA, Japan--Canon wants to take you into a virtual world so you can learn how to change toner cartridges better.

The headgear you see in the photo, along with the cube with the squiggles, is part of a "Mixed Reality Technology" prototype coined by Canon, which showed it off over the weekend during a special future-tech exhibit at Ceatec, the large Japanese trade show here.

It's called mixed reality because virtual and real-world images are mixed into one frame. When you put the goggles on and stare at the cube, you don't see squiggles. Instead, you … Read more

Copier translates languages on the fly

OK, so maybe wood engraving isn't exactly the kind of advancement in desktop printers that we've all been waiting for. This one is esoteric as well, but there are probably a few more people who will find it a bit more useful: It translates while making copies.

Fuji Xerox has developed a prototype that can scan Japanese text and print it out in translated English, Chinese or Korean without changing the layout of the original page. "Fuji Xerox's secret lies in networking the unnamed copier to a dedicated translation server and combining this with algorithms that … Read more

Candy-colored copiers

Panasonic apparently has an equal-opportunity paintbrush when it comes to equipment. Following the trend of neon appliances in the home, from refrigerators to washing machines, the company is applying its pallette to the color-barren workplace.

Its new line of C3 multi-functional copy machines come in such non-traditional office hues bright red, yellow and blue. We applaud the effort because, as I4U News notes, research shows that colors are generally good for productivity and morale at work.

However, we must say that doesn't hold a candle to Konica Minolta's psychedelic copier-DVD-latte machine--either in function or in hallucinogenic design.… Read more
