CBS TV shows hit Amazon Instant Video

Amazon gets streaming deal for 2,000 CBS TV episodes

Now there's one more way to watch old episodes of "Star Trek." CBS has struck another nonexclusive content licensing deal for its TV backlist, this time with Amazon for its Amazon Prime streaming video service. (Disclosure: CBS is the parent company of CNET).

The agreement brings 2,000 TV show episodes to the service to bring the total number of Amazon Prime instant videos to more than 8,000 movies and TV shows, the companies said. That includes full seasons of 18 TV series, such as "The Tudors," "Numb3rs," "Medium," the "Star Trek" franchise, "Frasier," and "Cheers."

For those who don't subscribe to Amazon's Prime service, dozens of CBS shows will also become available to Amazon Instant Video customers this summer.

No dollar amounts were disclosed for the deal, but it's assumed to be similar to the terms CBS struck with Netflix, which analysts said is worth $200 million.

A visit to the CBS vault

The U.S. government has Fort Knox, families have safety deposit boxes, and gym-goers have lockers--sacred places where valuable things are stored and protected. To extend the analogy, content companies like CBS have libraries; catalogues of hits old and new that represent the foundation of the entertainment business and the source of current and future income. We call ours the content vault. Check it out in the above video.

In any business, the key to long-term success is seeing beyond the flavor of the month to consistently create and sell a stellar product. At CBS, our biggest asset is and … Read more

Netflix streaming may lose some Showtime programs

At a time when many in Hollywood see Netflix as a threat, Showtime Networks said it will significantly alter the licensing agreement it has for Netflix's streaming-video service.

This summer, when the current deal between Showtime and Netflix expires, Netflix's new streaming agreement doesn't include any rights to any of the first-run series that currently appear on the premium-cable service. Under the new deal, Netflix subscribers will lose access to such shows as "Californication and "Dexter." (Showtime is owned by CBS, parent company of CNET.)

While past seasons of "Dexter" will be … Read more

Buzz Out Loud live at SXSWi

If you've been anywhere near Twitter in the last week, you know that the South by Southwest Interactive, Film, and Music festival (known lovingly as SXSW to just about everyone) starts this week. Last year was the first time that interactive registrants outnumbered even music festival attendees, so it's more than safe to say the Internet portion of the program has become the biggest part of the program (probably to the dismay of Austin's old-school music fans!). But hey, we can take a hint. If you're anyone at all online, you're at SXSW. So, we'… Read more

CBS Interactive hires Jim Lanzone as president

CBS Interactive, which publishes CNET, announced today that it has hired former Ask.com executive Jim Lanzone as president. He replaces Neil Ashe, who announced last year that he would be stepping down once a successor was named.

Lanzone joins CBS Interactive from Clicker, an online video guide company that he founded in 2008 after leaving IAC/InterActiveCorp, the parent company of Ask.com. As part of his hire, CBS Interactive will acquire Clicker.

"In just over a year, Jim has created one of the leading navigation and discovery tools for video programming on the Internet," CBS President … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 1412: Don't kill the URL bar, Google! (podcast)

Today in hot, fresh, buzzy news, don't panic: Libya can fire guns at protesters from helicopters, but it can't turn off all your bit.ly links. Phew, right? Also, even though the Motorola Xoom might not have Flash the day it comes out of the box, it'll have it within two weeks, so that's also a calm-down story. Plus, Amazon launches its Prime streaming service, Microsoft offers a Kinect SDK, and Apple might give a tiny little window of opportunity to Android tablets. Plus: save Chrome's URL bar! --Molly
