Google Street View 'dead body' mystery solved

What would you do if you saw the body of a girl lying on the sidewalk as you nosed your way around Google Street View?

Would you immediately decide it's a prank, laugh, and then go on with your quest of finding an image of a man wearing a horse's head?

Or would you, like the socially responsible residents of Middle Road, Worcester, U.K. (pronounce it Wooster, everybody), scream, then contact Google and that continual powerhouse of media activity, your local newspaper?

According to the Daily Mail, what these residents saw was not the dead body of … Read more

Feds admit storing checkpoint body scan images

For the last few years, federal agencies have defended body scanning by insisting that all images will be discarded as soon as they're viewed. The Transportation Security Administration claimed last summer, for instance, that "scanned images cannot be stored or recorded."

Now it turns out that some police agencies are storing the controversial images after all. The U.S. Marshals Service admitted this week that it had surreptitiously saved tens of thousands of images recorded with a millimeter wave system at the security checkpoint of a single Florida courthouse.

This follows an earlier disclosure (PDF) by the … Read more

Mobile iPod speaker desk: Take it with you

Now, here's a simple design that's really ingenious. The Compound Body 2 is one of many handiworks from Korean designer Yu Kwang Soo and his speaker furniture collection. This particular piece hides a stereo with custom cutouts for the boomboxes, control knobs, and an iPod dock within a wooden desk.

In addition, the table can be folded to reduce its footprint, while the entire concoction is collapsible for transportation. For this matter, a shoulder strip and handrails are included for mobility.

Apparently, some of the inspiring designer's offerings have been showcased at the recent Seoul Living Design … Read more

Ever wonder what your hypothetical children would look like with your significant other or your favorite celebrity? Or what the product of a union between your dog and cat would produce? A VW Rabbit gets independent throttle bodies

So as we saw in Monday's video blog, there are some car owners who not only love their Volkswagen Rabbits, but also want to update and upgrade their European bunnies. Well here's another adventurous Rabbit owner who sought to give his cottontail a power boost under the hood and did so with a little help from some independent throttle bodies.

For those of you not familiar, a throttle body controls the air intake into the engine in correlation to the pressure put on the accelerator. And this VW Rabbit gets blessed with a few Suzuki GSXR 650 throttle … Read more

BMI Calculator

Calculation of Body Surface Area provides a simple set of tools for calculating a body's mass and surface area. While it's easy to use, it requires expert medical or anatomical understanding to fully interpret the results.

The program's interface is simple to operate, with basic controls and layout. We particularly like that the program displays both metric and non-metric units of measure. However, it lacks a Help file, which we certainly needed to interpret its complex results. Moving the program's slider tool dials in the selected body's weight and height. The program quickly calculates the … Read more

Clean up text quickly

TextSoap is a powerful utility with a single purpose: to quickly clean up text from any source, so that you can reuse it in other applications. A godsend for software developers and Web designers who have to frequently work with a motley variety of text, TextSoap can almost instantly remove extra spaces and "garbage characters" while still maintaining text formatting--and it can also automatically convert formatting like bold and italics into its HTML equivalent by inserting tags.

The app's clean interface looks much like any simple text editor, but you'll find most of its power in … Read more
