It's got to be the No. 1 audiophile fantasy: someday we'll have a breakthrough that allows speakers to perfectly reproduce sound. Once the engineers find a new way of moving air -- presumably a more accurate method than a vibrating cone, dome, or flat diaphragm -- the heavens will part and we'll suddenly hear the sound of real instruments and singers through our hi-fis. Not so fast -- that would be a great start, but once the sound leaves the speakers and interacts with your living room's acoustics, all bets are off. Put aside the perfect … Read more
In a bit of an early back-to-school promotion, Best Buy has discounted the price of two of Apple's most popular 13-inch MacBooks by $200.
As first noted by All Things D, the electronics retailer on Thursday reduced the price of the MacBook Pro with a 500GB hard drive and 4GB of RAM from $1,200 to $1,000, while the 750GB model with 8GB of RAM is now available for $1,300.
Best Buy is promising customers a $200 trade-in value for older versions of Apple's iPad.
The promotion, which runs July 12 and 13, offers customers who trade in a working iPad 2 or third-generation iPad a minimum $200 gift card to the tech retailer. Customers also have the option of upgrading to an iPad with Retina display, which starts at $299.99 after applying the gift card. Best Buy currently sells the 16GB iPad with Retina display and Wi-Fi for $499.99.
Best Buy said customers could receive additional value depending on the model and condition of their tablets. … Read more
Zapya is a very effective, easy-to-use file-transfer app that suffers only from its lack of clarity during the installation and setup phase. Despite its slick design and early tutorial, it's not immediately clear how to share files with friends or other devices. As it turns out, it's fairly easy, so this is only an issue until you get it working; and while transfers are only as fast as the slowest device in the connection, it is generally quite quick.
Zapya connects iOS devices with non-iOS devices for file transfers. Because it is a near universal app, the process … Read more
Season 4 was definitely the most fun we've had since Always On started one year ago. That being said, we're hitting the road in hopes of making next season give Season 4 a run for its money. In the meantime, here's our three favorite stories from the last couple months.
We couldn't help but notice Jeff's perma-smile and what seemed like an emotional journey back to his childhood when he visited NASA in Texas. Driving the SEV with an astronaut who's spent more than a month in space can have that effect on a … Read more
They're small. They're portable. And they're breeding.
Yes, the mini wireless Bluetooth speaker has come of age, and it seems as if every week we see a new model hit the market.
They come in all shapes and styles and some are more rugged than others. But all of them stream audio from your Bluetooth-enabled devices, including smartphones, tablets, and computers. While we haven't reviewed every great tiny wireless speaker out there, we've certainly reviewed many of them -- and some not-so-good ones.
As always, if you'd … Read more
Are Microsoft's lame investments and partnership strategies an indication that its business is a mess? Not necessarily. Microsoft appears to merely be a hit-or-miss strategic investor.
A Wall Street Journal column noted that Microsoft's partnerships with the likes of Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Yahoo, Nokia and Dell are all lacking in some way. The implication is that Microsoft is limping and it prefers to partner with companies that have similar issues.
Another way to look at Microsoft's partnership issues is that it is a so-so strategic investor that has as many hits as misses. Microsoft … Read more
The 3DS hits its stride We have a rule: if a game platform has 10 good games, it's worth getting if it's affordable. That "rule of 10" means the Nintendo 3DS is finally worth investing in, if you care about great portable Nintendo games. The game library's filled out at last, and it's now, without a doubt, the best Nintendo platform of the moment. Game for game, it might even be the most impressive platform so far in 2013.… Read more
I am an unapologetic cheapskate. In fact, I got into this whole technology journalism thing as a way to feed my gadget lust without spending a dime to play with the latest tech.
I won't lie, it's a great gig. But just like any "kid in a candy shop" scenario, you gain a different perspective when you actually work in the candy shop.
There are a lot of good things to say about technology, and the high-tech age we currently live in. But it is also true that technology has provided a number of new and … Read more
