Are passwords our best security option?

Last week, Steve Bass described in his TechBite newsletter how someone cracked into his PayPal account, hitting him up for $400. Fortunately, Steve caught the theft in time to have the bogus charge reversed, but reading about Steve's experience made my blood turn cold.

The fact is, people get their online accounts pilfered every day. But this is Steve Bass we're talking about. I learned more about PC security from Steve while we worked together at PC World than I have picked up from any other 10 so-called experts. I know how careful he is when making purchases … Read more

Long Island town promotes hydrogen

Hempstead, N.Y., a small town on Long Island, is installing the island's first hydrogen fueling station.

Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray made the announcement at the groundbreaking ceremony in conjunction with the New York State Energy Research Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the electric utility National Grid on Wednesday.

The station will actually pump three options: pure hydrogen, hydrogen with compressed natural gas, and natural gas. Air Products is contributing to the station design, build, and maintenance.

While that station will cost about $2 million to build, it will be subsidized with $1 million from NYSERDA, $55,000 in the … Read more

Exploring the indoor grill

An indoor grill is a great option for whipping up a quick and easy meal. Ever since a certain boxer started hawking them, their popularity has exploded, and rightfully so. They are easy to use, easy to clean, and produce excellent results.

The Calphalon Removable Plate Grill has two separate dials on the front panel for temperature and time control, and it has a temperature range from 150-450 degrees. The bronze, nonstick interior keeps food from sticking, while excess fat is drained away into an internal drip tray. The grill height is adjustable, which is important in allowing for consistent … Read more

Where's my hydrogen?

When I was in elementary school back in the early 1960s, nuclear energy was going to be the Greatest Thing Ever. Electricity was going to be so inexpensive that electric meters would be a thing of the past. Nuclear-powered cars would run for a year on a pellet of fuel the size of a vitamin pill. Nuclear energy would power ships, aircraft, and just about everything.

Right...With the exception of military ships--submarines and aircraft carriers--nuclear transportation has been a complete washout. Since the Three Mile Island disaster 30 years ago, nuclear power has been a bad word in the … Read more

Video: Detroit, watch out for this Karma

On a test track in Southern California, a radical new car is getting its first workout.

The zebra stripes camouflage it from competitors, but you still get a good sense of the Fisker Automotive Karma, the brainchild of designer Henrik Fisker, who's trying to succeed where Detroit so far has failed, CBS News business correspondent Anthony Mason reports.

"The vision is to do a high performance, luxurious, sexy-looking car which gets better miles per gallon than the Prius," Fisker said.

The Karma is a plug-in hybrid. It can go 50 miles on an electrical charge before a … Read more

Inviting the audience to be part of the film

If you think you know what a movie is, get ready to have your assumptions dashed to pieces.

That's because of Breathe, a multimedia, multipart film project that is in the works from the London-based social entertainment company, Expanding Universe.

Equal parts cinema, alternate-reality game (ARG), dance club, and social network, Breathe is Expanding Universe's attempt at both redefining existing entertainment genres and inventing entirely new ones.

At its most basic level, the project is a multistage, interactive murder mystery with a time line, said Yomi Ayeni, Expanding Universe's creative director.

But Breathe, which the company hopes … Read more

The first fuel cell on wheels

The first fuel cell car was developed by which company, when?

Surprise answer: General Motors, in 1966. (Sound of jaws dropping in the audience, no doubt...)

The Electrovan looked like a GMC van on the outside, but inside it looked like Mad Scientist City. Developed by Craig Marks and associates, the Electrovan had a Union Carbide fuel cell that used liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. Yes, it was rocket science. Hydrogen fuel cells need oxygen, which, while amply available here on Earth, is a "bring your own" commodity in space. Fuel cells, at that time, were space-capsule technology.

I saw the Electrovan in person when the California Fuel Cell Partnership hydrogen-refueling station in West Sacramento, Calif., was opened back in 2000. It was a static display, and a fascinating piece of history. Think Leonardo da Vinci's helicopter, only actually built. Well, maybe not quite that futuristic, but close.
