The 404 863: Where we're broadcasting live from outer space (podcast)

Anthony David Adams joins us on today's episode in hopes that one of our listeners has the next object that will allow him to trade his way into space. He started with a toy spaceship and five trades later, he already has a ticket for a One Zero G Space Flight, so hit him up if you want to make him an offer.

While he's trading his way up, Anthony's also looking to build space exploration kits replete with Space HD Video Exploration Modules for at least 100 school districts, so sign up your local school at the Students in Space Project Web site. If you'd like to donate to the SpaceKits Project, PayPal donations are accepted at donate@onetoyspaceship.com.

On top of all that, Anthony brings our listeners a chance to win a free Nook and a watch from Nooka, the company designing the packaging for the Students in Space kits! The contest is simple:

Like OneToySpaceship.com Leave a comment on this blog post that answers this question: I want to go to outer space because________ and I am willing to trade ____________. Send out a tweet linking to the contest, and that's it!

Thanks again to Anthony for coming in today, and be sure to listen to the full episode to hear how he got started with the space project, why it's necessary to make redundant backups of our intergalactic hard drive, and how he plans to be the first member of the Parsec High Club.

Google not killing translate API, will develop paid version

AllThingsD

Following public outcry, Google said on Friday it is revisiting its plan to kill off third-party access to its translation engine. The company will instead develop a plan to offer a paid version for others who wish to incorporate it into their services.

Google said last month it planned to end the Translate API because of abuse, but many of those who had built services using the tool had called on Google to instead just charge for it.

"In the days since we announced the deprecation of the Translate API, we've seen the passion and interest expressed by … Read more

'Dilbert' creator uses fake ID to tell Web he's great--report

This writing thing isn't easy.

You reveal yourself (or at least part of yourself) to the world every day and hope the majority of people who encounter your work won't want to spit in your general direction.

So who can't find a trace of sympathy for Dilbert creator Scott Adams?

It seems Adams, despite his undoubtedly boundless riches, still wanders onto message boards to see what people are saying about him (at least according to Gawker)--and he uses a false handle and says very, very nice things. About himself.

That would be, at a human level, … Read more

Lens Bracelets: Fashion for cameraphiles

Those who live and breathe photography never leave their cameras too far out of sight. When they're not taking pictures though, die-hard shutterbugs might find a cool fashion statement in the Lens Bracelet.

Designed by San Diego-based professional photographer Adam Elmakias, the silicone bracelet resembles a portion of a lens barrel. It comes in two colors, black and white. Lens information such as focal length and an "AF/MF" switch are embossed in white (black for the white bracelet), with the bracelet showing great attention to detail.

In an initiative to help those affected by the recent disaster in Japan, 50 percent of proceeds from the sale of the Pro Japan (70-200) bracelet will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

Elmakias initially used the bracelets as a promotional tool for his photography business, but now ships them to more than 50 countries. The Lens Bracelets go for $10 apiece.

Apple has fired another legal salvo over the use of the term "app store," this one targeted at adult app store MiKandi.
