Audi unveils new A6 sedan, hybrid model

DETROIT--It was no surprise that Audi unveiled a new A6 sedan at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show (the automaker's booth was ablaze with a gigantic A6 sign), but many people didn't expect a hybrid model to debut alongside it.

Let's start under the hood. The A6 can be had with any of five gasoline engines, three TDI engines, or a gas-electric hybrid power train. The hybrid blends Audi's 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected gasoline engine with an electric motor to output 245-horsepower with an estimated fuel economy of 37.94 mpg. Teaser videos and pictures of the 2012 Audi A6 have been swirling around the Internet for the past couple of days, but here is the real thing.

Worldcarfans.com this morning posted this video on YouTube. It shows the 2012 Audio A6 sporting a delightful, if not conservative, design.

The 15-minute video highlights the LED headlights, taillights and 16-inch alloy wheels, an integrated trunk-lid spoiler, and a dual exhaust system. The wheelbase has been stretched out a bit longer than the 2011 as well.

Two cloud standardization efforts made public

The last several days has seen two standardization-related events that I think are worth of note. Standardization, of course, is a critical element to creating fluid markets for compute, development, and application services in the cloud. There are several efforts already under way, including the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) Open Cloud Standards Incubator, the Open Grid Forum's Open Cloud Computing Interface working group, and the Storage Network Industry Association Cloud Storage Technical Work Group. Forget the smog-spewing oil-burners of old--a whole new generation of cleaner diesel cars is on its way to U.S. showrooms. In anticipation of the new wave of European-sourced diesels, we got our hands on an Euro-spec Audi A6 3.0 CDI to see how it compared with its gasoline equivalent. Having put it through a number of highly scientific emissions tests and the obligatory zero-to-60 run, we have to admit to being fairly impressed. Check out our photos of the Euro-spec Audi A6 diesel.
