Cadillac plans a return to racing with the CTS-V Coupe

Cadillac is known for its racy television commercials, but now, once again, it'll be known for racing.

Executives from General Motors today announced that a race-ready 2011 CTS-V Coupe will compete in the Sports Car Club of America World Challenge.

The CTS-V, which is being designed by engineers from GM and Pratt & Miller, in New Hudson, Mich., will debut at the SCCA race to be held March 25 to 27 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Cadillac hasn't raced competitively since 2007.

Automotive journalists name 2011 Chevrolet Cruze 'Urban Car of the Year'

The 2011 Chevy Cruze this week was voted "Urban Car of The Year" by Decisive Media and an independent panel of 15 automotive journalists.

The Chevy Cruze, which comes in five including the Cruze LS, Cruze LT, Cruze 2LT, Eco Cruze, and Cruze LTZ, has an MSRP range from $16,995 to $22,695 in the U.S.

Chevy auctions off Volt for Detroit school programs

You have a chance to bid on the first production Volt available to the masses. General Motors has put the first Volt off the assembly line up for auction. The electric vehicle, with extended range, will have a MSRP of $41,000.

The car up for auction has a Viridian Joule exterior, light neutral interior with dark accents and loads of extras, including the premium trim package, rear camera and park assist package, and polished wheels. The auction also includes a 240-volt charging station and home installation (a $1,500 value).

GM engineers develop sunscreen for the Corvette

Exposed-weave carbon fiber now has a fighting chance against UV rays. The lightweight material, used to give the Corvette better speed and handling, can be protected by a new clear coat that is sprayed on like paint.

This industry-first technology acts as a sunscreen for the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. "Everyone said it couldn't be done, and we were crazy for trying," Mark Voss, senior design engineer for the ZR1 said today in a press announcement. He and his team worked for three years on their own time to develop the clear coat.

NASA, GM robot preps for space mission

While "robots in space" might sound like a cliche, the Robonaut 2 (R2), will finally be blasting off into outer space next week aboard the space shuttle Discovery. R2's assignment, at the International Space Station, is to assist the astronauts as they work.

GM and NASA created R2 to further vehicle safety systems. Because R2 has advanced sensor capabilities, researchers are able to improve features in vehicles, such as crash avoidance. R2's hands also have incredible dexterity and sensitivity that could some day be used in manufacturing industries.

GM exec reveals Volt production plans

General Motors plans to produce as many as 60,000 Chevy Volt cars in 2012.

While not an official announcement, Doug Parks, GM's global vehicle line executive, told The Detroit News his company expects to produce 10,000 to 15,000 Volt electric cars in 2011, but that in 2012 GM may ramp up its production of the hybrid-electric car to as much as 60,000 cars.

One pricey wagon: The Cadillac CTS-V Wagon will start at $62,990

The wagon is back--in a big way.

General Motors is now taking orders for the CTS-V Wagon; a limited number of these beauties will be available later this year starting at $62,990.

The wagon, which debuted at the 2010 New York auto show in April, boasts a supercharged 6.2L V-8 with 556-horsepower. It can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.0 seconds.

It comes standard with six-speed manual, or a six-speed automatic transmission. And it has other features such as Brembo brakes and 19-inch forged-aluminum wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires.

GM announces 'Volt Unplugged' road tour

General Motors today announced "Volt Unplugged," a 3,400-mile, cross-country tour to promote the launch of the $41,000 electric vehicle.

The tour kicks off October 9, 2010, in Seattle, Wash., and wraps up in Chicago, Illinois, on November 20. The Volt will be available next year in select markets.
