Musical road in Japan

As John Cage knew, music is everywhere. If you take a second to turn the radio (or MP3 player) off in your car, you might hear the vibrations of the tires against the road. And if you happen to be driving at 28mph on a particular road in Japan, you might notice that the designers of the road have placed grooves at different intervals so, as you drive, the sound changes, creating a song.

iTunes 7.5: Updated, but who cares?

Apple's omnipresent media player iTunes has quietly upgraded to version 7.5 for both Windows and Mac. There's no grand new interface, no code-scrubbing to make the Window version load quicker, and certainly no support for Linux users. There's not a lot to bother with, period, unless you're a Old World iPhone customer.

Remix and remake

On it, the legendary composer and pianist covers a number of classic Joni Mitchell songs--only "cover" doesn't quite describe it. In true modern jazz fashion, the takes are more thematic and spiritual than literal. The combination of Mitchell's haunting lyrics, Hancock's revamped melodies, and vocal cameos by artists from Norah Jones to Tina Turner is often stunning.

River's Hancock-Turner duet, "Edith and the Kingpin," is a highlight of a new jazz playlist, Remix and remake, … Read more

Flosstradamus DJ Mix

If you haven't heard of the Chicago DJ duo Flosstradamus, then we suggest you hop on to it. A Flosstradamus DJ set sounds like hipster pirates took over the mainstream rap radio station in a major city--like their own Chicago--where the duo's famed parties center around a whole mess of unapologetically drunken music fanatics and a tracklist that throws in everything but the kitchen sink. Curious? A free music download of one of those sets is available for you to get your freak on.
